Annual global design challenge seeks submissions that consider ‘intelligent mobility’ of future home appliances.
Electrolux Design Lab 2011 invites industrial design students and recent graduates of industrial design to compete for a six-month paid internship and prize money by submitting ideas that consider intelligent mobility within home appliances. The competition, which has been open to global contestants for nine consecutive years, is specifically seeking solutions from consumer insights that address how people prepare and store food, clean and do dishes both within and beyond the home.
Solutions that Inspire, Support and Guide
“We are looking for design concepts that will inspire users while utilising existing technology to offer support and guidance,” says Sutti Manokitjarunman, General Manager of Electrolux Thailand. “This challenge is not just about making appliances that are physically more portable, rather it is about providing flexible control to liberate time and support creative expression.”
Eight finalists from around the globe will each be invited to participate in a final event in the autumn of 2011 held within a European city (to be announced) to present their individual concept to a jury of experts in various fields. The prize is a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre and 220,000 bt (5,000 Euros). A second prize of 130,000 bt (3,000 Euros) and third prize of 87,000 bt (2,000 Euros) are also on offer.
Thai entrants have performed strongly in the contest recently. K.Dulyawat Wongnawa, a design student from Chulalongkorn University, became one of only eight global finalists in 2009, and picked up the “People’s Choice Award” after receiving the most votes from people around the world. He also qualified as one of 25 global semi-finalists in 2010.
Thailand Competition
In addition to the global award, Electrolux Thailand also organizes the competition at national level. All local design students who are interested can apply and submit their works until May 1, 2011 via the Electrolux Design Lab website: www.electroluxdesignlab.com. The first prize winner will receive 50,000 baht in prize money. The second and third Thai winners will receive 25,000 and 15,000 baht respectively.
“The competition provides a great opportunity for industrial design students to showcase their creative ideas through the electrical appliances design with the specific theme each year. Electrolux believes this competition will be another experience inspiring Thai’s youth to showcase their distinctive potential at both the global and national level.” said Mr. Sutti Manokitjarunman.
The jury members for the Electrolux Design Lab Competition 2011 in Thailand compose of M.L. Kathathong Thongyai, Director, Office of Business Relations and Advisory Service Department of Export Promotions, Ministry of Commerce; Mr. Kittiratana Pitipanich, Design Advisory Director of Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC); Mr. Sakkachat Sivabovorn, President & CEO, Industrial Design Network Co,Ltd. and Mr. Sutti Manokitjarunman, General Manager of Electrolux Thailand.
