The global winner will be awarded with a prize of 5,000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre. The first and second runner-ups will be offered prizes of 3,000 and 2,000 Euros respectively.
The eighth Electrolux Design Lab 2010 competition is open to undergraduate and graduate industrial design students from all over the world to submit their designs via www.electroluxdesignlab.com. Their works are be judged by internationally-recognized panels of experts from various professions. There are over 1,300 submissions from around the world this year, which is a 30 per cent increase on last year.
“The Second Space Age 2010” was the theme for this year as global urbanization increases, the perceived value and potential use of space in domestic environments is explored. This year, special consideration will be given to designers that submit a design within the context of a range or suite of solutions/appliances. The design ideas should address key consumer requirements; being green, adaptive to time and space, and consider individualization. The submissions included designs for food preparation and food preservation, laundry and household cleaning, for the lifestyle in 2050 (in the next 40 years) that over 74% of the world’s population are predicted to live in an urban environment. Growing populations living in concentrated areas dictate a need for greater space efficiency.Sutti Manokitjarunman, General Manager, Electrolux Thailand said “We are delighted to organise the Electrolux Design Lab again this year. I am impressed by the designs by Thai youths at international level and I hope this activity encourages more quality designers in Thailand.
Dulyawat Wongnawa’s “Zephyr Integrated Laundry System” was inspired by the idea that living space will be smaller in the next 40 years since more of the global population will move to live in the cities. Consequently, household electrical appliances and facilities need to be adjusted to match the environment.
Dulyawat explained that laundry and clothes storage requires a series of processes, such as cleaning, drying, ironing and storing. Each process consumes individual space and this limitation was the inspiration for the new integrated laundry system combining laundry with clothes storage in order to minimize the workspace and increase convenience.
The multi-functional “Zephyr Integrated Laundry System” looks like a closet. However, each piece of clothes is stored separately in its own space. The equipment scans the RFID in the cloth to find out the proper cleaning solution for each piece and the clothes are then individually cleaned using an Air Wash system. The Air Wash system blows hot air and releases negative ions to capture the clothes’ dirt. The highlight of the “Zephyr Integrated Laundry System” is to reduce cleaning tasks by decreasing complexity, difficulty and cleaning space into only one small closet.
Jubilant Dulyawat said: “I am delighted and surprised to hear that my design has won again this year as I think this year’s theme is quite difficult and challenging. I am proud to create a product that helps to reduce laundry time, so that we are able to spend more time on other activities. I hope my idea can be applied in the future.”
At the national level, this is the 5th year of “Electrolux Design Lab” and every year Electrolux Thailand conduct a road show to promote the campaign at leading universities in Bangkok. For universities in upcountry the company will promote the campaign by sending them a letter together with campaign poster. The competition has received great interest from design students who submitted designs. All local designs were judged by M.L. Kathathong Thongyai, Director Office of Business Relations and Advisory Service, Department of Export Promotions, Ministry of Commerce; Mr. Kittiratana Pitipanich, Design and Creative Business Development Director of Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC), Mr. Sakkachat Sivabavorn, President & CEO, I-Design Publishing Co.,Ltd. and executives from Electrolux Thailand.
“The submitted designs are very interesting this year since the designers were obliged to create product ideas that are able to be used practically in the future. In addition, the products need to fit limited space usage. The winning designers and others came up with creative ideas. They also blended these with other furniture functionality,” judge Mr. Kittiratana said.
The national first runner up was awarded to the “Quarter Ceiling Fridge” by Kwanjit Chayapum, a fourth year Architecture ,Industrial Design student at Chulalongkorn University. Her concept is a compact size fridge that is attached to the ceiling. The fridge size can be adjusted according to the number of users and it also has a ceiling lamp and uses solar cell technology.
“The second runner up is “Surge – All-in-One Laundry System”, designed by Chalermpon Treerakulwanich, a fifth year student of King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi.
Negative Ions are used to clean, dry and press clothes at the same time in one place. The equipment can also collect details of the clothes in the closet for dressing information. The whole system is also linked to the central electronic panel for centric control. The total value of the prizes for national “Electrolux Design Lab 2010” is 90,000 Baht.
