Results of the First 6 Years of EGAT's "Energy Conservation Program" and launch the new program to increase the consumption of "Label Number 5"
The objective of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand's (EGAT) "Energy Conservation Program" was to raise the consumers' awareness in the efficient use of energy. This report has been prepared as a summary of the results of this program over the initial 6 years, and to unveil new Energy Conservation Program, aimed at increasing the Thai consumers' use of products bearing the "Label Number 5".
One of the primary goals of EGAT is to inform Thai consumers of the importance of energy conservation. Over the initial 6 years of "Energy Conservation Program" has experienced a great deal of success and enjoyed tremendous cooperation from Thai consumers. Since the beginning of the program, total sales of products bearing the "Label Number 5" have increased substantially, with an annual rate of increase between 10-15 percent. As the program enters the seventh year, EGAT has dedicated efforts to increase consumer cooperation even further, in hopes of achieving the goal of complete consumer support of "Label Number 5" products within the year 2001.
Mr.Amnuay Indratanee, Director of Demand Side Implementation Division, has recently come forward with the results of the first 6 years of "Energy Conservation Program". According to the findings of EGAT, "Energy Conservation Program" has experienced extremely high levels of success, decreasing overall electrical consumption by 597.3 megawatts, and carbon dioxide emissions by over 2,457,704 tons.
According to studies performed by EGAT, there are several reasons for the success of "Energy Conservation Program". Perhaps the most significant reason for the success of this program is the wide range of products available bearing the "Label Number 5". At present there are six energy-efficient products available, and currently additional products are being developed in cooperation with several leading manufacturers. In addition to this program, EGAT has also initiated the "Green Building Program", and is presently working with local refrigerator manufacturers to increase standards of product quality by 20% for products bearing the "Label Number 5 of 2001".
In an interview, Mr. Amnuay Indratanee claimed that "If we were looked at all of our conservation efforts individually in order to determine our most successful program, we would be certain to find that our highest rate of success has been with the promotion of thin tube. Currently, fluorescent are used almost exclusively throughout Thailand, a fact which certainly is the result of a concerted, coordinated effort on the part of all involved parties, from manufacturers down to the consumers. In addition to thin tube, we have also experienced success with other "Label Number 5" products, which include: 6,068,357 refrigerators; 718,211 air conditioners; 726,462 ballasts; and 3,892,360 bags of brown rice."
As a result of this program-wide success, EGAT has set even higher goals for the year 2001, and has planned to expand the number of products bearing the "Label Number 5" by at least 10 percent. According to Mr. Amnuay Indratanee, "EGAT plans to increase the range of products bearing the "Label Number 5" to include energy-conserving thin tube, electric fans, electric irons, and electric rice steamers; all of which are presently being developed to international standards of quality."
In addition to the aforementioned objectives, EGAT has also planned a number of other program for the first trimester of 2001. Perhaps the most significant of these planned objectives is the development of quality standards for products bearing the "Label Number 5" . Refrigerators marketed under the "Label Number 5" brand, in particular, have been singled out for quality improvement that will increase efficiency by an additional 20 percent. This plan is expected to have several positive effects. In addition to the fact that Thai consumers will reap the benefits of these improved products, this plan will also have positive effects on the Thai economy as a whole, as it will reduce of Thai depend on imported fuel. The first stage of this program has already received cooperation from 18 domestic refrigerator manufacturers and foreign refrigerator importers.
Apart from larger program, such as the "Energy Conservation Program", EGAT has several other program scheduled for the year 2001 aimed at educating the Thai consumers on the value of energy conservation. Perhaps the most notable of these secondary program is our plan to promote jasmine brown rice as an alternative to traditional.
