Central Food Retail Enters The Thai Wine Market Selected new range of wines from around the world with Climate Control/C Statement from winery to the customer Central Food Retail Co., Ltd. has announced the launch of its new wine program. All marketplace by TOPS and selected TOPS Supermarket will have an entirely new range of wines which have been sourced directly from wineries. In all, Central Food Retail will import nearly 400 new wines to Thailand from nearly 100 wine regions throughout the world. The new range of wines will be available in 26 stores of marketplace by TOPS and TOPS Supermarket. Clearly, there is a current trend toward increased consumption of wine by the Thai population. The primary reason for this involves the overwhelming evidence that drinking wine is beneficial to your health and particularly good for the heart. However, it is also important to demonstrate that wine needs to taste good for people to continue to drink. Preserving the freshness and quality of the wine depends entirely maintaining the proper temperature control. Central Food Retail is currently the only one in Thailand taking this issue seriously. Ian Pye, President of Central Food Retail, began laying the groundwork for this program over one year ago to obtain all of the necessary licensing, logistics and support of the international wine community. Mr. Pye states: “We are anticipating 7% market share of imported wines by 2010 after launching this program. With this program, Central Food Retail will further demonstrate its commitment to distribute both quality imported and domestic products.” “All the wines in the Central Food Retail range are guaranteed to have maintained their freshness and have been selected for their high quality. The range of wines comes from such well established wine producing countries such as Australia, France, Spain and Italy. We are the only Thai company importing more than 200 wine brands such as d’Arenberg, Majella and Paringa from Australia, Santa Julia from Argentina and Mas de Bressades from France. As Thailand’s leading supermarket group, we need to recognise our customer’s needs and provide this level of quality and service,” Pye added. To control the quality, these wines have been shipped in temperature-controlled containers and kept in proper storage conditions from the winery to the warehouse to the stores. Many of the stores have now been renovated to offer the wine twenty-four hour protection from the heat of Thailand. Central Food Retail has taken this step because wine is a living and breathing organism that, like any perishable product, must be kept away from heat to avoid going bad. Wines exposed to heat lose their vibrancy, flavour, colour and freshness. Therefore, TOPS and marketplace by TOPS are placing a climate control sticker on every bottle that is symbol of quality that guarantees that this wine has been shipped and stored in temperature controlled conditions from the winery to their warehouse to their stores to the customer’s table. TOPS Supermarket and marketplace by TOPS, will further its commitment to creating the best wine shopping experience in Southeast Asia by becoming Thailand’s first Approved Program Provider for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (UK). The WSET is the only wine & spirit education organization approved by the UK government as a national awarding body of vocational qualifications. The WSET qualifications provide underpinning knowledge, which can be applied in a number of different job functions. Their goal is to have a sales team that is deeply informed with regard to the entire product range through a comprehensive educational initiative. These classes will be given by Thailand’s first Approved WSET Tutor, Ross Edward Marks, Central Food Retail’s General Manager for International Wine. It is the goal of Central Food Retail to train over 60 employees in 26 stores over the next 12-18 months.
