Smart Cities in Practice from Chinese Perspective: Smart China Introduced Chinese Localization Solution for Smart Cities

Under the theme of "Pulling together in one direction", this year's European Utility Week (EUW) which runs from Oct 15 to 17 at the Amsterdam RAI continued to attract business players from all over the world to discuss city-wide utility developments such as smart grids, renewable energy, ICT and smart cities. Mr. Terence Yap, CEO of Smart China, a smart city operator in China, brought to the EUW conference the latest development of smart cities in China.

Under the programme "Smart Cities in Practice", Mr. Yap from Smart China, told the audience that China is undergoing a second urbanization revolution which provides tremendous market opportunities.

"The coming out of the 12th Five Year Plan and the MHURD's issuance of pilot smart cities has highlighted the importance of smart city deployment on a national strategic level," Mr. Yap said. "With the growing concerns relating to the environment including pollution, waste, congestion and security, the government is now hoping to promote urban sustainability through the deployment of smart city projects. The second urbanization is going to shift from quantity focused to quality focused, with better emphasis on innovative technological solutions."

Understanding that China differs from the rest of the world in terms of urbanization pace, scale and complexity is the key in delivering right solutions at the right time.

"A holistic city planning approach is vital to ensure that the city is future proof," Mr. Yap said.

According to Mr. Yap, Smart China aims to offer the local government one-stop shop service in smart city development. This includes urban master planning and technology systems integration. The urban master planning will involve not only space zoning and technology system layout designs, but also industrial development designs, which the company believes to be the key solution to the government's urbanization challenge. It will also conclude city stickiness, which aims to ensure that the city residents will want to live, work and play in the city for the long term. The technology systems integration, implemented based on the previous designs, will include the four major technology schemes, including security, energy, transport and automation.

According to Mr. Yap, the group is now in the process of launching two smart city projects in China. "To ensure that we provide a comprehensive solution, Smart China seeks to engage and collaborate with partners, both domestically and internationally. Which is why that we are here, pulling together in one direction, for a brighter future for modern cities."
