UOB Thailand has been awarded top honours in the banking category at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administation (BMA) Waste Management Model awards, recognizing its leading role in sustainable waste management practices.
The Bank's UOB Waste to Wonder programme has earned it the distinction of being the only bank to meet the criteria for a "Zero-Waste Organisation" this year in alignment with BMA's Zero Waste campaign.
Mr Chow Wong Yuen, Chief Sustainability Officer, UOB Thailand, said, "This award underscores a crucial reality: every action, no matter how small contributes to our collective environment impact. Our waste management initiative is a bank-wide collaboration that goes beyond mere infrastructure. It's about cultivating a culture of sustainability within UOB. We're educating our employees on waste reduction and proper segregation. By implementing these practices, we are actively reducing our own footprint while actively supporting Bangkok's vision for sustainable living. This demonstrates how the financial sector can be a powerful catalyst for environmental change, starting from within our walls and extending into the communities we serve
The Waste Management Model competition, led by the BMA, recognises organisations excelling in comprehensive waste management across Bangkok's 50 districts, with a focus on 18 waste-generation communities or organisations. Evaluation criteria include establishing policies, key measures, and operational guidelines. This encompasses measures to promote waste reduction and segregation at the source, strategies for communication and collaboration, and management practices for different types of waste.
UOB Thailand's achievement demonstrates the Bank's commitment to integrating sustainability into its core operations, benefiting customers, employees, the broader community and the environment.
UOB Thailand hosted its latest Sustainability Compass Forum, reaffirming its commitment to helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) transition to low-carbon operations and capitalize on emerging opportunities in the green economy. The event brought together sustainability experts, industry leaders, and SME stakeholders to share practical strategies, regulatory updates, and financing solutions aimed at supporting Thai businesses on their decarbonization journey.
