3M Thailand Celebrates a Corporate Culture That Defines One of World's Most Innovative and Admired Companies Empowering Employees, Encouraging Creativity and Innovation, and Promoting Social Responsibility Are Hallmarks of Company's 100-Year History
Becoming one of the world' s most recognized and successful companies certainly didn't happen overnight for 3M - who is celebrating its Centennial anniversary this year. A unique and forward-thinking business model and corporate culture was built upon a foundation that recognizes its people as the company's most valuable resource. It's a formula that has earned 3M a perennial Top 10 spot in the "Most Admired Company" category of Fortune magazine's distinguished corporate rankings. And this year 3M, topped "The Most Innovative Company in Corporate America" list.
3M Thailand - who is also celebrating its 35th Anniversary this year - is being led by one of the company's many home-grown success stories. Dr.Jack Truong arrived as Managing Director a year-and-a-half ago, and brought with him a personal style and approach that embodies the very things that have made 3M so successful - innovation and creativity, empowerment and social responsibility. Dr. Jack personally holds nine U.S. and international patents - all of which were hatched in the labs of 3M and used in the development of new 3M products - and has another three patents pending. He is a firm believer in empowering employees to make themselves and the company better - as he himself has done - and in encouraging employee-based initiatives.
3M Thailand recently hosted its annual "3M Innovation Day," where all employees have the opportunity to participate in a science fair-like event to showcase and/or demonstrate creativity by exhibiting new ideas and products that they've dreamed up. The inventions are only limited by imagination. It's just as much as a spirit building event as it is an opportunity for employees to stretch their minds and potentially spawn the next innovation for 3M.
"In the next three to four years, we'd like to double the size of 3M Thailand, and with that growth, we want to continue to create and maintain an environment where the employees help cultivate that success. It's an important part of 3Ms culture to create unique opportunities for employees, both inside and outside of their daily job functions, that challenge their imagination and creativity. Risk

taking and innovation are requirements for growth," explained Dr.Truong. "The objective of the global 3M family is to embrace the values of the company in ways which will benefit the products we produce for consumers, and hopefully enrich our employees' lives along the way. The culture of 3M is very open, and employees are encouraged to set and pursue their own career paths. This is the success of 3M."
3M also takes a customer-driven approach to its business, and believes that innovations not only come from its internal sources, but from listening to customers needs and anticipating potential problems in every day situations. 3M's divisions regularly conduct research to stay ahead of market trends and find potential solutions for its customers. But ultimately, it's the employees who are challenged to use this research and their creativity to arrive at those solutions.
"The way we encourage our employees to think, is to constantly look at everyday situations and ask themselves…I wish I had 'what' to do this task or 'why doesn't 3M have a product to handle 'this'? It's proactive idea generation, and there's a strong belief at 3M that no idea is too 'half-grown' to be considered. In today's business world, intellectual property and knowledge are the most valuable resources. What has made 3M so successful is that the leaders our company realized this a long time ago," added Dr. Jack.
3M Thailand employees, as with all of 3M's global locations, also have the opportunity to trial 3M products before they're available in the market - both as prototypes and/or finished products - to pre-determine their effectiveness and viability and recommend revisions or adaptations to the design. 3M is leading to provide product and process solution package to customer as partnership, to co-develop and to initiate new ideas for local vehicle developing -3M ABF, Film system is New Changes both products and process perspectives to replace Paint system to satisfy Automotive customers in terms of Total merit by increase productivity, reduce tact time, keep gloss consistency and easy application. Through its Community Affairs programs, 3M promotes social responsibility and strives to contribute to communities where its employees live and work. At 3M Thailand, Dr. Jack has helped expand 3M's reach into the Thai community with the "Dream for Rural Students" program, which is benefiting underprivileged children in provincial area schools. Through the program, 3M Thailand donates computers, classroom supplies and resources for school libraries in order to help improve the learning potential of these children and make a difference in their lives.
