The Western Union Company (NYSE:WU), a leader in global payment services, announced today the availability of the Western Union? Money TransferSM services through Bank of Ayudhya’s (BAY) 4,500 ATMs nationwide. In addition to BAY, Thanachart Bank (TBANK) also offers the Western Union service through 2,000 ATMs, enabling consumers in Thailand to send international remittances in minutes1 and receive money fast via over 6,500 ATMs anytime they want. This complements Western Union services offered through its retail Agent network of more than 4,700 locations across all 77 provinces in Thailand2. “We congratulate BAY as they collaborate with us to expand services and channels in response to consumer demand for a choice of channels whether that is to walk in to a location, or access to an ATM 24/7,” said Vipawan Yongvikul, country director, Thailand, Western Union. “Money transfer in and out of Thailand has great potential driven by the diversity of consumers wishing to move money in and out of the country. They include families of Thai workers overseas receiving for regular support, tourists receiving for emergencies, entrepreneurs sending to their partners for goods and services, and guest workers sending funds to their homelands.” The growth and dynamism of the Thai economy is reflected in the country’s stable and low unemployment rate of between 1% and 2%3. Over two million workers come to Thailand from countries around the region, including Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, who remitted an average of 31,756 Baht over two years4. Approximately 800,000 Thais went overseas to work, mostly to Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East5, with many of them having a need to send money back home. In 2012, Western Union helped consumers to transfer funds from Thailand to 198 countries and territories, while money was transferred to people in Thailand from 192 countries and territories, reflecting the trust in the Western Union brand. 1 Funds may be delayed or services unavailable based on certain transaction conditions, including amount sent, destination country, currency availability, regulatory and foreign exchange issues, required receiver action(s), identification requirements, Agent location hours, differences in time zones, or selection of delayed options. Additional Restrictions may apply. See Send form for details. 2 Network data as of June 30, 2013. In certain countries, the send money service is not available; customers can only receive money. 3 Source: The World Bank (http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SL.UEM.TOTL.ZS). 4Source: The International Labor Organization (http://www.ilo.org/wcmsp5/groups/public/---asia/---ro-bangkok/documents/publication/wcms_122089.pdf). 5Source: Asian Development Bank (http://www.adbi.org/files/2013.01.23.cpp.sess2.1.capannelli.labor.mobility.asean.pdf).
