Sands China Ltd wins IMEX 2014 Green Supplier Award
Presenting the award to Syed Mubarak, Director of Sustainability for Venetian Macau Limited, IMEX Chairman Ray Bloom commented: “We have been extremely impressed by the standard of entries this year, highlighting the efforts that organisations such as Sands China are taking to reduce the environmental impact of their operations. It is great to see so many businesses really going the extra mile to boost environmental progress and drive sustainable business models.”
Sands China Ltd. is a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands Corp., the leading developer, owner and operator of multi-use integrated resorts in Macao. The developer’s award entry detailed how it implemented a formal environmental management system through the Sands ECO360° global sustainability programme for Cotai Strip Resorts Macao, the largest integrated resort complex in Macao. It focused on four pillars: green buildings, environmentally responsible operations, green meetings and stakeholder engagement.
One of its largest hotel brands, The Venetian® Macao, achieved gold certification in Macao’s Green Hotel Awards in recognition of its several initiatives to save energy, water and recycling. Through a variety of energy conservation initiatives the property saved more than 42 million kWh during the period 2008 to 2013. These included efficient use of lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation systems as well as operational scheduling.
The IMEX judging panel also deemed The Venetian Macao’s recycling activities impressive. In 2013 the hotel recycled almost 870 tons of paper, 61 tons of plastics, 52 tons of cooking oil, 27 tons of metal and 150 tons of other wastes such as glass, soap and shampoo. The venue also recycled over 2,200 kg of soap and bottled amenities through the charity Clean the World.
The IMEX GMIC Green Supplier award was one of three green awards presented at the IMEX Gala Dinner, together with a series of Academy Awards and other industry achievement awards.
