Rice is more than just a fundamental food source for billions around the world; for Thailand, it lies at the heart of our culture, lifestyle, and national identity. As a vital economic driver, rice has long been played a key role in shaping Thailand's economic framework, generating significant employment and income for millions of farmers and stakeholders throughout the supply chain. Thai rice also holds a central place in the global food system. Celebrated for its exceptional flavor, superior quality and diverse array of varieties, Thai rice has garnered significant recognition in global markets, consistently positioning Thailand as a preeminent rice exporter worldwide. This reinforces the nation's considerable potential and importance as a leading global food producer, actively contributing to the fortification of global food security. Amidst a rapidly transforming global economic landscape, maintaining and enhancing the competitiveness of Thai rice stands as a critical imperative. This is particularly salient in an era marked by increasing worldwide demand for high-quality food, alongside escalating production costs and intensifying competition from other exporting nations.
According to the Thai Rice Exporters Association, Thailand exported 1.19 million tons of rice valued at 26.16 billion baht during the first two months of 2025 (January-February). This represents a significant year on year decline of 32.9% in volume and 35.1% in value compared to the same period in 2024.
A central pillar in empowering Thai farmers to maintain and enhance their rice production capabilities is the strategic adoption of modern agricultural innovations and technologies. This encompasses the development of new, high yielding rice varieties exhibiting resilience to pests and diseases, possessing enhanced with improved nutritional profiles, and aligning with evolving market demands. Furthermore, innovation must permeate the entire rice production continuum - from seed selection and field cultivation to pest management, harvesting and post-harvest practices to guarantee consistent quality, elevate productivity and improve farmers' profitability. Modernizing Thailand's agricultural sector towards greater sustainability, efficiency, and future readiness is not only a strategic imperative for preserving long term competitiveness within the global rice market but also underscores the nation's responsibility as a pivotal contributor to the international food supply network. Syngenta Thailand, as a global leaderin agricultural innovation and technology, is dedicated to sustainably elevating the Thai rice industry. This commitment is realized through the advancements of pioneering crop protection solutions, comprehensive rice cultivation management programs, and precise nutrient management strategies tailored to the specific needs of rice at each growth phase. In addition, Syngenta's team of expert agronomists provides localized, in-field guidance, partnering directly with farmers across the country. These endeavors are designed to empower farmers to achieve higher yields, improve crop quality and effectively meet the evolving demands of consumers in both domestic and international markets.
Pitsanu Apirajkamol, Marketing Director of Syngenta Crop Protection Co., Ltd., stated, "Our mission is to empower Thai rice farmers to produce both for domestic consumption and international export in a truly sustainable and competitive way. But success in rice farming today is not just about producing more - it is about producing rice of consistent, high quality that meets specific market demands. That is why we are committed to supporting farmers across the entire value chain, from upstream to downstream, through innovative crop protection solutions and biostimulants specifically developed to enhance the productivity and quality of Thai rice. Our on-the-ground experts work hand-in-hand with farmers - planning from the earliest stages, such as land preparation and seed selection, to weed management, pest and disease control, and overall plant health, even under challenging environmental conditions. We stay with them all the way through to harvesting and post-harvest care, ensuring that every technology we offer is applied with maximum effectiveness and impact."
A cornerstone of Syngenta's initiatives is the "GroMore" program, a holistic and integrated system for rice field management. This program strategically incorporates the application of crop protection products, effective pest and disease management, and the use of plant nutrition and biostimulants to bolster rice health across all developmental phases - from seedling to tillering, panicle initiation, and heading. The program's core objective is to help farmers adopt technology in a safe, cost-effective, and impactful way. Syngenta also continues to invest in research and innovation, continuously developing new solutions that enhance rice productivity and quality, while improving the control of challenging pests and diseases, mitigating resistance, and safeguarding the surrounding ecosystem.
"Achieving high yields and quality in rice cultivation today is no longer just about applying fertilizer or spraying chemicals as we used to," stated Pranee Suannum, a rice farmer from Phitsanulok Province. "Every step now requires careful, systematic management - especially in our region, where we have only 60 days to grow. Efficiency is crucial. Thankfully, we've had strong support from the Syngenta team, who provided tailored guidance from field planning to implementing solutions aligned with each stage of the rice growth cycle. This includes precise pest and disease control, effective weed management, and the use of biostimulants enriched with essential nutrients. As a result, our rice plants are lush and green from the early stages, with full, heavy panicles. Most importantly, using just the right amount of product at the right time - matched to our rice variety and environmental conditions - has significantly helped us lower production costs." For Syngenta, the success of Thai farmers extends beyond mere yield statistics to encompass the creation of new value for Thai rice, establishing it as a globally recognized premium food product. Concurrently, Syngenta is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and long-term stability of farmers. This vision becomes reality when farmers gain access to the right knowledge, tools, innovations, and technologies at each stage of the cultivation process.
