IBM today completely overhauled its NetVista desktop computer line to reflect emerging trends in security, migration and wireless connectivity, including a total revision of its award-winning integrated flat panel PC, the sleek new NetVista X41. Four new ThinkPad notebook models were also announced, which boast innovative wireless and security features.
According to IDC report, it said "Corporate buyers are clearly seeking more efficient ways to manage their system images. In addition, excellence in functional as well as aesthetic design is becoming more important as a means for vendors to distinguish their offerings in an increasingly commodity-like marketplae. PC manufacturers able to offer improvements in these areas are likely to find receptive customers."
The new NetVista line divides IBM desktop PCs into three categories: New M series, focusing on maximum performane with superior manageability and security features. The revised A series, blending performance with afffordable prices ; and The existing X series, emphasizing extraordinary space-saving designs with high performance.
Beyond the changes in operating systems and processors being offered industry-wide some IBM desktop series are engineered to offer models with these IBM innovations:
Embedded Security Subsystem, available for corporations upon special request, a security tool offered only on IBM desktops and notebooks that encrypts user keys, files and e-mails, protecting the user's e-mail,Internet transactions and important files
Numerous new IBM migration support tools that help users manage the overall cost of dealing with their PCs, including; restoring PC functions after a crash; and IBM Access Support service programs that point the way toward self-healing PCs.
New wireless options that allow desktop PCs to be moved more easily between offices, without requiring the installation of new network ports or recabling.
IBM is announcing significant enhancements to the ThinkPad lineup which include the following enhancements :
IBM has redesigned the ThinkPad A Series including two modular bays. The Ultrabay 2000 and the new Ultrabay Plus are the only bay with dual functionality for the ultimate in mobility.
IBM has extended integrated 802.11b wireless technology for wireless local area network capability across select models of the new ThinkPad notebook computers. These select models will now feature IBM'sinnovative dual antenna design that places the antenna in the top cover, providing stronger signal strength and eliminates the need for optional wireless PC Cards. This eliminates the need for optional wireless PC Cards that can be lost and have a protruding antenna sticking out of the side of the notebook.
IBM ’s integrated wireless design on select ThinkPad notebooks such as the ThinkPad ‘R ’ series does not compromise Ethernet or V.92 ready modem Connectivity -- both are built in as well (and the PC Card slot(s) are open for expansion and the UltraPort connector (on select models) is available for optional Bluetooth short-range wireless capability).
Some ThinkPad A Series models will also be equipped with an additional antenna for Bluetooth technology to enable personal area networking with other individual devices (printers, PDAs and cell phone)
X, T and A Series models are available with the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem which provides peace of mind that e-mail and files can have an extra level of protection as users travel across the Internet. It also helps prevent hackers from accessing files via the Internet and helps prevent a thief from getting into those files if the notebook is stolen.
Commonality and flexibility in the ThinkPad X, T, R and A Series notebooks use the same docking solutions, wireless solutions, UltraPort connector solutions, storage, memory, power adapter and Ultrabay devices which means less parts for easier management.

The new NetVista M41 combines Pentium 4 processor performance with the widest degree of migration, manageability, security, and expandability available in IBM desktop systems. The NetVista X41 now leads the all-in-one category in a period notable for the increasing acceptance of flat panel monitors at lower price points. The NetVista X41 models save up to 75% more space than comparable Pentium 4 systems. This is especially so with its special unique design of having the keyboard stored beneath the moniter, while the optical drives hides in the pedestal when not in use.
NetVista A22p - For demanding applications at a cost - effective price The new NetVista A22p offers the popular tower form factor design and many of these features with slightly less flexibility at a more affordable price.
ThinkPad X, T, R and A Notebooks - More Freedom, more peace of mind The revitalisation of the new ThinkPad notebook line includes the new ThinkPad R series line, with improved mobility, essential features andperformance at an affordable price point.
The ThinkPad R30 has the best blend of portability and is mainly for mobile users who want easy, ready-to-run computing. With a travel weight of 5.5 lbs, the ThinkPad R30 has a TFT screen choice ranging from 13.3 inch to 14.1 inch, is only 1.4 inch thin and has shared options such as a docking solutions with the X, T and A Series, all at an affordable price. The improved ThinkPad X series offers integrated wireless capability and security features for the first time on an IBM ultra-portable notebook.
With its extra - light, extra small ultraportable features, the ThinkPad X22 is for extremely mobile users who spend most of their time working away from the office. With a 12.1 inch TFT screen, it has a starting weight of 3.4 lb. and is about a mere inch thin, with a battery life of up to 5 hrs.
The refreshed ThinkPad T series has been renewed to include integrated wireless capabilities allowing a perfect balance of performance and portability. For highly mobile users who work in the office, on theroad and everywhere in between, the new ThinkPad T23 has a travel weight starting at 4.6 lb and sports a 14.1 inch TFT screen. Select ThinkPad T series models also offer a DVD/CDRW combo for users.
The new ThinkPad series of notebooks all come with Integrated Ethernet and have a 3-year warranty (except for the ThinkPad R series which has a 1 year warranty). The non-wireless models of the ThinkPad X, T, R and A series are currently available while the wireless models of this new ThinkPad series will be made available to the public in a month's time.
New IBM Access Support
Some of the desktop systems being introduced today are preloaded with IBM Access Support, a customizable solution that provides quick, automated solutions to commonly reported problems. Designed to reduce the amount of time users spend trying to solve computer problems, it uses technology licensed from Support.com to automatically diagnose and resolve issues with system configurations and applications. In addition, IBM Access Support provides a service portal with graphic, easy-to-understand explanations ofthe various diagnostic, maintenance and service tools available on IBM systems, educating users on when to use them. The preload also provides a common IBM service and support platform that will be upgraded over time, enabling new services in the future that will further automate and simplify PC support.
New IBM Options
The new IBM DVD-RAM / DVD-ROM Drive, provides 9.4 GB of data storage and the capability to edit and author digital video to a DVD that is playable in most set-top DVD players.
IBM announced the 32 MB USB Memory Key, a highly portable keyfob-sized storage solution that connects to the USB port of desktop and notebook systems. The new memory key offers four times the storage at less thantwice the price of IBM's previous 8 MB USB Memory Key.
