Bangkok--Sep 8--TSC
Thai Satellite Telecommunications Co.,Ltd. (TSC), the owner of the IRIDIUM Gateway for Southeast Asia, has entered into an agreement with Advanced Info Service Public Company Ltd. (AIS).
Mr.Ukrid Sresthaphunlarp, Vice President of TSC's Commercial Department, announced TSC had signed the agreement, making AIS a roaming partner in the IRIDIUM Roaming Service. As a result of this agreement, IRIDIUM subscribers will be able to roam onto the AIS Digital GSM network. At the same time, the agreement will allow AIS subscribers to roam onto the IRIUDIUM World Satellite Service.
Both AIS and IRIDIUM subscribers stand to benefit from this partnership, Mr.Ukrid explained. digital GSM subscribers will now have access to a wider range of telecommunications services. Utilizing the Digital GSM network in countries that have a roaming agreement with AIS, and the IRIDIUM Satellite Network in any other country, Digital GSM Subscribers will be ensured greater convenience in communication, with no coverage limitations.
The IRIDIUM system is the first to offer handheld mobile satellite communication service to the public. Digital GSM subcribers, therefore, will have the opportunity to experience the latest and most advanced telecommunications technology through access to IRIDIUM's satellite technology.
Instead of carrying many cellular phones for use with various systems while travelling, AIS subscribers can simply carry the IRIDIUM dual mode handset. They will be able to keep the same phone number and SIM, through which they will have access to full communication coverage.
Worldwide use of the IRIDIUM dual mode handset will result in only one bill for digital GSM subcribers. No matter where the phone is used, whether in Singapore, Hong Kong or elsewhere, AIS subcribers will receive one bill with a summary of all charges from the different places calls were made.
IRIDIUM customers will also benefit from the partnership between TSC and AIS since they will be able to use the digital GSM network while traveling. If an IRIDIUM customer is in a remote area with no cellular service, the IRIDIUM satellite network can be used to communicate. While in areas where cellular service sexists, however, IRIDIUM customers can roam onto a terrestrial network. A simple, single billing system will also apply to IRIDIUM customers, regardless of where calls are made.
TSC is one of the strategic partners in the IRIDIUM consortium, which indludes 18 othe major corrporations and national telephone companies. The IRIDIUM System itself is a network of 66 low earth-orbit satellites designed to deliver reliable voice, data, paging and facsimile communicationsl all over the planet. For the first time, golbal satellite communication will be possible in the form of compact, personal, handheld portable telephones.
