Starbucks assures Product Quality and Safety to Consumers

Bangkok--Sep 18--Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide Starbucks Coffee Company is very concerned with the recent reports in a few newspapers speculating that the company is selling a product, Tazo Chai tea, which allegedly contains ephedrine. Starbucks would like to clarify this issue with the following statements: - Starbucks Coffee Company takes seriously its responsibility to serve customers with products that are of the highest and safest quality. - These press reports have apparently resulted from a lawsuit recently filed in California. Although it is Starbucks policy not to comment on pending litigation, we can confirm that we are strongly contesting the lawsuit and we believe there is no basis for the plaintiff's claims. - Ephedrine has never been used as an ingredient in Tazo's Chai tea or any other Tazo or Starbucks products. Starbucks has retained independent laboratories to test Tazo Chai tea for the presence of ephedrine and the results have been conclusively negative. - Starbucks does not currently sell any Tazo Chai tea or any other Tazo products in its retail stores in Thailand. It stands behind the Tazo products as safe, high quality teas, which are enjoyed by many consumers around the world. - The Tazo Earl Grey tea, the only flavor of Tazo tea sent to Thailand, is also unrelated to the lawsuit in California. Furthermore, the shipment of Tazo Earl Grey tea, reported in the local media as Tazo Chai tea that was purportedly shipped back to the US, is currently going through customs clearance and Starbucks Thailand will work with FDA to pursue additional testing requirements if necessary. - Starbucks Thailand assures its customers that since the opening of its first store in July 1998, it has worked closely with the local regulatory authorities to ensure that the store products are safe and of the highest quality.
