HSBC LAUNCHES YOUNG IT ENTREPRENEUR AWARDS TO REWARD YOUNG STUDENTS WITH INNOVATIVE IT BUSINESS IDEAS

Bangkok--Aug 24--HSBC HSBC in Thailand today launched “the HSBC Young IT Entrepreneur Awards” - a nationwide competition to reward undergraduate students who present innovative IT business ideas. On offer are awards and prizes worth over one million baht, including cash prizes, overseas study trips and a chance for the champions to represent Thailand in the first regional competition organised by HSBC in Hong Kong. The HSBC Young IT Entrepreneur Awards 2004-2005 invites full-time Thai undergraduate students to submit innovative business proposals that involve the use of IT in such a way that could lead to the creation of a successful business venture or enterprise. The objectives are to inspire creativity among Thailand’s young generation, increase their interest in IT development and foster their entrepreneurial business skills. David Kenney, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC in Thailand, said, “We are launching this initiative in Thailand because we firmly believe in helping today’s students to become tomorrow’s successful business leaders. The Awards will also provide students with a valuable opportunity to act on their talent and help them acquire practical business knowledge.” The HSBC Young IT Entrepreneur Awards 2004-2005 is fully supported by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT). H.E. Dr. Surapong Suebwonglee, MICT Minister, said, “I am pleased to learn that HSBC provides an opportunity for Thailand’s younger generations to demonstrate their ingenuity and business vision. I believe today’s Thai students have strong potential to develop innovative IT business ideas. The support and encouragement from both public and private sectors are vital to help them succeed.” Open to full-time Thai students at local universities and colleges, the competition will run from August 2004 through April 2005. Participants are required to apply in team of 2-3 members and submit an IT business idea written in English to the organising committee on or before 15 November 2004. Qualifying teams short-listed by the judges will be invited to attend training workshops on business planning and presentation skills. The panel of distinguished judges, co-chaired by Mr. Kraisorn Pornsuthee, Deputy Permanent Secretary of MICT, and Mr. David Kenney, includes senior government officials, leading businessmen and academics. Submissions from participating teams will be judged according to creativity, commercial viability and the application of IT knowledge and skills. The Gold Award winning team will receive trophies for all members, a 100,000 baht self-development fund, a chance to represent Thailand in the first HSBC Young IT Entrepreneur Awards Regional Competition to be held in Hong Kong in June 2005 and a one-week study tour, “Journey of Future Entrepreneurship”, to the University of Washington, Seattle, the U.S.A. There are also cash and recognition prizes for the Silver and Bronze Awards and seven others outstanding teams who do not qualify for the Grand Final.
