MasterCard International reveals less than 0.03% of the 13.9 million MasterCard cards potentially breached at US-based CardSystems Solutions last week were issued in Thailand.
The breach of payment card data reported last week was at US-based CardSystems Solutions, Inc, a third-party processor of payment card data. (Third party processors process transactions on behalf of financial institutions and merchants). The breach potentially exposed more than 40 million cards of all brands – of these less than 0.03% were Thailand’s MasterCard-branded cards while less than 2% were issued in Asia/Pacific. While the breach of payment card data has been reported, this does not, however, imply that the cards have been used for fraudulent transactions.
Preceding the discovery of the breach, MasterCard performed digital forensic investigation on CardSystems’ databases to identify the potentially compromised accounts and immediately alerted member financial institutions. MasterCard will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with all parties on the investigation in the US.
Employing a sophisticated alert system and working in close collaboration with members financial institutions, MasterCard continues to remain vigilant in ensuring that the high security level of cardholder transactions is upheld.
