Google extends experimental features to international users as Gmail marks its fifth birthday
Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced that Gmail Labs will now be available internationally in 49 languages. Gmail Labs is an experimental feature playground within Google's free email service, Gmail.
Gmail Labs offers users useful and quirky tools to enhance and personalise their email inboxes. Initially launched in English in June 2008, Gmail Labs has offered 43 features in 43 weeks and most of these features will now be available around the globe in local languages including Thai languages. Users can enable and disable Gmail Labs features individually with just a few clicks of the mouse. Some of the Gmail Labs features include:
- Offline Gmail - access your email and compose messages even when you don't have an internet connection. Changes are synchronised when you reconnect to the internet.
- Undo Send - retract an email for up to five seconds after it has been sent.
- Mail Goggles - within a chosen time window, this tool allows you to send mail only if you can solve a set of simple maths problems. Otherwise, get a good night's sleep and try again in the morning.
- Forgotten Attachment Reminder - prevents you from accidentally sending messages without the relevant attachments by prompting you if you have mentioned an attachment without adding one.
- Tasks - adds a to-do list to your inbox. You can create tasks manually, or directly from an email, and edit your list from your phone while on-the-go.
The announcement coincides with the fifth anniversary of the launch of Gmail on April 1st, 2004.
"We're excited to launch Gmail Labs internationally around Gmail's fifth birthday," said Eric Tholom?, Director of Product Management at Google. "The rapid innovation in Gmail Labs makes it a perfect example of how Gmail has grown over the last five years: creating a more intuitive, powerful and innovative email programme for users."
"Back in the days when email was tied to the desktop, it was limited in storage and usability," said Pornthip Kongchun, Thailand Marketing Manager, Google Southeast Asia. "Because Gmail lives on the Internet, in what we call the 'cloud', we're able to innovate quickly and offer users creative, new and useful features on a regular basis."
“Gmail Labs open opportunities for me to choose new Gmail features as much as I want to personalise my email experience. Many features in Gmail Labs are quite important to my work and everyday life, such as the Offline feature that enables me to use Gmail without going online just like using software in my computer. The Superstar sign is another feature I use alot as it assists my email management immensely,” said Wasan Liwlompaisan, co-founder of Blognone and an avid local blogger.
“I have used Gmail from the very early days that the interface is still in Google’s white style. Until today, Gmail offers me abundant features that I can choose and use. My favorite feature is the Spam Filtering feature which saves me from headache wasting my time deleting spam email in my inbox. Gmail also allows me to sort and color my emails with the Label feature. I am truly impressed with the Google team who keep developing new features in Gmail Labs non-stop. My Gmail activity gets more fun and easier especially with a new cute feature in Gmail Labs like “Undo Send” that I can abort unintentional sending,” said Komsit Rattana, an engineer student of Chulalongkorn University.
“I use Gmail regularly because of not only an amazing storage inbox that I can manage large size photos or images very easily, the Spam Filter screens and rejects all spamming messages sending to me so I do not worry about getting attack from these spam. Gmail Labs has a new feature called Multiple Inboxes that I can turn on to check emails from different mail servers from Gmail account, this is wonderful now I do not have to log-in many accounts to get updated,” said Nattakrit Pouchaiya, junior student, Faculty of Science and Technology, Program Computer Science, Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok, Chakrabongse Campus
“Personally I use Gmail regularly so when there are new features in Gmail Labs I do not miss to try. Actually there are a few features that I am quite impressed for example Offline Gmail. This feature helps me to use Gmail even when I have no internet access especially that my works are store in the emails. So this is kind of a guarantee to me that I can work at anytime and any where which is very important. Other feature in Gmail Labs like Multiple Inboxes and Title Tweaks are inventive and make my life easier when doing email,” said Pongsuk Hiranpruek, Managing Director, Show No Limit Co.,Ltd
