General Motors Thailand/Southeast Asia and Chevrolet Sales Thailand registered strong growth in 2010, recording an increase in sales of 32 percent over 2009, with a market share of 2.5 percent.
December was the strongest month for GMTH with retail sales increasing by 34 percent over the same period in 2009. This coincided with the successful media and public launch of the Chevrolet Cruze, the latter held during the year-end Thailand International Motor Expo 2010.
“Our December sales were the strongest month since March 2006, and in just over one month since its launch, the Chevrolet Cruze registered total bookings of over 1,000 units while the new Aveo CNG recorded more than 800 units nationwide” said Martin Apfel, President of General Motors
Thailand /Southeast Asia and Chevrolet Sales Thailand.
“In fact, the first car booked at Chevrolet’s booth during the Motor Expo – and this was during the non-public press day – was a Chevrolet Cruze, underlining the strong interest towards Chevrolet’s segment leading compact car.” Mr. Apfel added.
A total booking of 1,681 units during the 12 days at the Motor Expo exceeded all expectations. This was more than double compared with bookings at 2009’s Motor Expo and also placed Chevrolet as the number one manufacturer amongst non-Japanese brands in terms of sales. Other models launched during the Expo included the Aveo CNG, the Captiva with a new gasoline engine and the Colorado pick-up truck special edition.
Strong growth was also seen in other Southeast Asian markets. In Indonesia, GM sales grew significantly by 65 percent over 2009 outpacing industry growth for Indonesia which was expected to be at 57 percent over 2009.
In the Philippines, with its projected industry growth of 12 percent, GM recorded a 56 percent growth over 2009.
In total, GM has enjoyed an encouraging growth in sales across Southeast Asia, an impressive 30 percent increase or 30,000 units over 2009 with the Chevrolet Captiva as the flagship model contributing up to 25 percent in total sales across the region.
“I am totally confident that we have the right foundation to drive the next stage of growth for GM’s business across Southeast Asia and beyond — that is, a great brand, great products and great people” Martin Apfel said.
