AOT and SCB announce the temporary closure of Sky Lane Thailand for an improvement program to optimize the facility’s capacity andenhance safety to become a better bike track

Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) and Siam Commercial Bank Public Company Limited (SCB) announce the Suvarnabhumi "Sky Lane Thailand" Bike Track Project will temporarily close for seven months starting from April 11, 2017, for an improvement program to optimize its capacity and enhance safety to make it a better bike track for all cyclists. The improvements will result in a more comprehensive infrastructure including an additional bike track, expanded parking area, a new bike bridge that connects to Suvarnabhumi Airport's long-term parking facility, resurfacing the jogging track, and the construction of a Bike Center. The improvement program will offer cyclists who use Sky Lane Thailand an even more unrivaled cycling experience.
Mr. Prasong Poontaneat, Chairman, Airports of Thailand PLC, said, "The AOT's intention to develop a soil barrier around the Suvarnabhumi Airport perimeter into a 23.5 km bike track aligns with AOT's corporate social responsibility policies, with an aim to promote health benefits and safety among cycling enthusiasts. Formerly known as the 'Green Track,' the venue had become so popular that, as a result, AOT in partnership with SCB decided to implement a development project to upgrade the cycling track and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on April 8, 2015. Later, the Suvarnabhumi 'Sky Lane Thailand' Bike Track Project, a long-term partnership between AOT and SCB, met its initial objective of encouraging cycling as an exercise and building a network of friends among all levels of cyclists. The initial project to upgrade the bike track around Suvarnabhumi Airport resulted in a safer and more efficient cycling path that meets world-class standards, with a better infrastructure and facilities to handle an increasing number of track users including professional cyclists and general riders. Sky Lane Thailand officially opened in December 2015, and throughout its one year and three months in service, has provided a new and impressive experience for thousands of cyclists. Sky Lane Thailand features a world-class 23.5 kilometer cycling track built to international standards; an innovative 'SNAP' wristband with embedded radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to make it convenient and efficient for cyclists to enter and leave the track; and extended opening hours from 6:00 am to 19:00 pm.; along with great facilities such as a convenient car park, rest areas, and restrooms, all free of charge. Currently, Sky Lane Thailand is an ideal destination for cyclists, with 2,000 to 3,000 riders using it on weekdays and around 5,000 to 10,000 on the weekend, especially during early morning and evening peak hours."
Dr. Vichit Suraphongchai, Siam Commercial Bank Chairman of the Executive Committee, said, "As a result of its popularity, Sky Lane Thailand is nearing its capacity to handle a large number of cyclists in terms of the existing bike track and parking for 1,500 vehicles. The bottom line is that AOT and SCB will enhance the project to provide a more comprehensive range of facilities. To do this in a sustainable, efficient, and timely manner, we will temporarily close Sky Lane Thailand from April 11, 2017, onwards to improve the bike track and its surroundings. We expect to reopen in mid-November 2017. Although this large-scale improvement will take seven months to complete, it will be worth the wait, compared to the previous six-month closure to turn the old green bike lane into a standardized bike track. The upgraded facilities and services will, most importantly, remain free of charge for everyone."
AOT and SCB revealed the improvements and upgrades to Sky Lane Thailand will include:
          - A new bike track parallel to the existing bike track that will accommodate all levels of cyclists, to handle the increasing number of riders and reduce the risk of accidents.
          - Expanded parking space and a new bike bridge that will connect the project with Suvarnabhumi Airport's long-term parking facility, which has a capacity of around 3,500 vehicles, to provide sufficient parking space for cyclists and make it convenient for them to reach the track.
          - Adding a first-aid point at the second rest area of the main bike track.
          - Building a covered rest area next to the small bike track, as there are many young riders, so the project wants to provide a rest area where parents can keep a close eye on their children.
          - Resurfacing the jogging track that runs parallel to the small bike track.
          - Building a Bike Center that will feature a food court, a repair and maintenance service shop, and space for selling food and beverages.

Before Sky Lane Thailand closes on April 11, 2017, AOT and SCB will hold a cycling farewell activity on April 8 and 9, 2017, offering cyclists the opportunity to meet with representatives from the project operator and receive some souvenirs. All cyclists are invited to take part in the cycling farewell activity until they meet again when Sky Lane Thailand reopens in mid-November 2017.
