As part of its commitment to reducing its environmental impact under Hilton's Travel with Purpose commitment, Millennium Hilton Bangkok has reached out to local communities to encourage students to separate the garbage by types of waste, starting from school.
For nearly 100 years, Hilton has bettered the world through genuine hospitality. As part of its annual Global Week of Service where more than 355,000* Team Members around the world have the opportunity to participate in local projects that make a lasting, positive impact in the communities where they live, work and travel, Team Members from Millennium Hilton Bangkok had undertaken a number of activities to [input the objective of all the activities here].
The activities include renovating the school hall at the Thong Thammachart School, starting conversations with local convenience stores to co-promote a Plastic-Free campaign, and the latest being a donation drive for garbage separation bins to schools . The hotel's Team Members gathered to decorate garbage bins which will be donated to three schools: Wat Thongplaeng School, Wat Suwan School, and Wat Thong Thammachart School.
The garbage separation bins are painted with cartoon characters and separated into four colors:
- Green bins for organic waste
- Blue bin for general waste
- Red bin for biohazardous waste
- Yellow bin as a general recycling bin
Team Members from the hotel went to all three schools to educate students about the importance of garbage recycling and the impact of separating garbage for recycling purposes.
"At Millennium Hilton Bangkok, we have always taken a strong focus internally in protecting the environment by continuously implementing projects that will help to reduce waste and preserve resources. This year, we hope to share our knowledge with the local community by educating young children from three different schools on the importance of recycling through garbage separation. We would like to instill in them at a young age that every small measure we take today will have an impact on our future," said Heidi KleineMoeller, general manager of Millennium Hilton Bangkok.
"This initiative has been very well-received so far, and many other schools have also reached out to us to be part of the program. It is our hope that this positive message will also spread to the larger community, from the children to their parents and friends. Our hotel team is looking to do more in raising awareness that will ultimately shift people's mind sets and their habits to take a more serious approach in protecting our environment. We have only one planet and it is everyone's responsibility to protect it for the generations to come," she added.
In May, Hilton committed to cutting its environmental footprint in half and doubling its social impact investment by 2030. With this commitment, Hilton plans to reduce water usage by 50 percent and is committed to removing plastic straws from all of its 650 managed hotels globally. Hilton will save an estimated 35 million straws per year from potentially ending up in the ocean.
The company will also double the amount it spends with local and minority-owned suppliers, and double its investment in programs to help women and youth around the world. These goals are part of Hilton's Travel with Purpose corporate responsibility strategy to further the United Nation's 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
