Ericsson and Chulalongkorn University Jointly Unveil 5G-enabled Use Cases

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Thailand’s leading academic institute, Chulalongkorn University, have today unveiled their latest collaboration at “Chula 5G For Real Exhibition” with a series of jointly developed use cases powered by 5G, AI and IoT-enabled technologies. The use cases include 5G-enabled autonomous vehicles, tele-dentistry for an aging world population, AI for tele-medical services.

“Starting from 2019, we have been developing use cases at our 5G Innovation Center at Chulalongkorn University with different industry partners including Ericsson. Funded by NBTC (Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission), our mission at the 5G Innovation Center is to develop use cases that will benefit society and help drive new businesses. After a year of hard work, we are here today to showcase our achievements and progress on 5G technology development in Thailand,” said Professor Dr. Watit Benjapolakul, Chairman of the 5G Wireless Telecommunication Service Test Bed Project.

Fast, responsive and reliable, 5G will drive the digitalization of businesses and create new opportunities for a variety of sectors, including healthcare, automotive and manufacturing. In Thailand, the total projected revenue value of 5G-enabled digitalization revenues will be approximately USD 7 billion by 2030.

“It is a great honor for us at Ericsson to be part of this collaboration with Chulalongkorn University, to highlight 5G’s game-changing potential at the “Chula 5G For Real Exhibition” today, said Nadine Allen, Head of Ericsson Thailand.

“As we all know, 5G is not just another G. 5G is a platform of innovation, ready to transform both industries and society at large. 5G will bring the internet of things to the next level, where high-performing connectivity is a prerequisite to cater for everything from smartphone applications to human-robots collaboration in real-time on factory floors,” Nadine said.

Having been present for over 100 years in Thailand, Ericsson is committed to enabling telco service providers to unleash the full benefits of connectivity, allowing for a superior end-user experience. Globally, Ericsson has been actively investing in R&D to develop a leading and comprehensive 5G portfolio, including an end-to-end 5G platform covering advanced technology solutions, such as Ericsson Spectrum Sharing and 5G-ready (hardware) radios.

Additionally, Ericsson collaborates with leading telecom operators as well as over 40 universities and technology institutes and 30 industry partners, to better understand new use cases and build thriving 5G ecosystems.

“With the spread of COVID-19, fixed and mobile telecommunications networks have become an even bigger part of the critical infrastructure, showing the importance of high-quality connectivity to keep countries and businesses productive,” Nadine said. “High-speed mobile connectivity like 5G will be instrumental in providing a stable platform for innovation and economic growth for Thailand.”

Today, Ericsson has signed 99 commercial 5G agreements or contracts with unique operators, and is currently supporting 55 5G live networks across five continents.
