Explore Dreams, Hopes, and Inner Reflections at Gongkan's "No Heart Here" Exhibition Opening at MOCA BANGKOK, 14 September 2024

to challenge perceptions and spark introspection.

Bangkok, 12 September 2024 - Step into a realm of surrealism and imagination like never before! The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA BANGKOK), in collaboration with Tang Contemporary Art, is proud to present No Heart Here, an extraordinary solo exhibition by renowned Thai artist Kantapon Metheekul, best known as Gongkan. From 14 September to 27 October 2024, the exhibition invites audiences to experience a world where fantasy meets reality, evoking deep reflections on the complexities of life through the lens of surrealist art.

In No Heart Here, Gongkan delves into the delicate balance between body and mind, unveiling hidden dialogues that are often left unspoken. Inspired by surrealist icon Rene Magritte, Gongkan's works juxtapose familiar landscapes—vast fields, shifting skies, and weather patterns—layered with surreal elements that challenge the viewer's perception. The exhibition offers an introspective journey, encouraging visitors to explore emotional depths and engage with the art on a more personal level.

The exhibition is divided into distinct zones, each offering a unique experience that prompts visitors to rethink their perspectives:

Painting Room

In the Painting Room, Gongkan showcases his signature style, blending Magritte's surrealist techniques of pairing unrelated objects with his own personal narrative. Influenced by the playful visual language of 90s cartoons and his experiences in New York and Bangkok, Gongkan's works strike a balance between accessibility and intellectual depth, creating a powerful storytelling experience that is both nostalgic and thought-provoking.

Maze of Dreams (วงกตแห่งภาพฝัน)

The Maze of Dreams represents a symbolic journey through the intricate maze of memory, illustrating the complexities of the human mind. Each room within the labyrinth reveals fragments of Gongkan's past, illustrating how memories can simultaneously shape and confine us. Visitors are invited to explore the maze and seek liberation from the constraints of their own pasts, highlighting themes of personal growth and self-discovery.

After the Rain

Drawing inspiration from the saying, "After the storm comes the rainbow," this installation radiates hope and optimism, reflecting the belief that brighter days always follow life's storms. After the Rain symbolizes the artist's unwavering faith in miracles and a brighter future, offering viewers a powerful reminder that challenges can be overcome.

Let it Go

As we age, the emotional weight we carry—accumulated thoughts, secrets, and burdens—often becomes heavier. In Let it Go, Gongkan invites viewers to release what holds them down, creating space for new experiences and fresh opportunities. This installation speaks to the idea of emotional liberation, encouraging reflection on how we can unburden ourselves and embrace change.

Gongkan's work combines visual beauty with intellectual challenge, providing both aesthetic delight and profound conceptual insights. His recurring motifs, such as the figure of the boy with the black hole, provoke questions about the boundaries between reality and imagination, leaving a lasting impression on all who encounter his art.
