Under this collaboration, the two parties will jointly develop and implement projects to advance animal health and veterinary services, while raising public awareness of the vital role veterinarians play in society. The cooperation includes the exchange of expertise, academic knowledge, and professional resources; the development and dissemination of educational and training materials; and the organization of workshops, seminars, and community engagement activities. Collectively, these initiatives will strengthen professional capacity and help raise animal healthcare standards across Thailand.

Addressing the Needs of Emerging Pet Parents in Chiang Mai

The collaboration also responds to Thailand's growing Pet Humanization trend, particularly in Chiang Mai, which is rapidly developing into a regional economic hub. The city's urban expansion—through new housing and condominiums—has fueled a rise in both population and pet ownership, with cats becoming increasingly popular as household companions. Data from Chiang Mai University's Small Animal Hospital show that the number of cats receiving care has steadily increased over the past years, reflecting a strong demand for higher-quality veterinary services.

In response, the "NEXT Level Vet' Xpert" initiative supports the establishment of the CMU Cat Center, an integrated feline health center designed as a cat friendly clinic in alignment with the Gold Standard of the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM). The center will expand access to specialized cat healthcare in Chiang Mai and surrounding areas, set a new benchmark for feline medicine in Thailand, and work toward official ISFM Gold Standard accreditation.

Tackling the Stray Animal Challenge Through Proactive Collaboration

Beyond raising standards of animal care, the partnership also aims to address the critical national challenge of stray animals. According to a nationwide survey by the Provincial Administrative Organizations in 2019, Thailand is home to approximately 2.493 million stray dogs. In addition to animal welfare concerns, strays are a significant vector of rabies transmission to humans.

To tackle this issue, the two parties plan to adopt the CNVR (Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) approach, modeled after Chiang Mai University's "MaCMU Project." This program has already demonstrated success in stabilizing and reducing the stray dog population, providing a sustainable and effective framework for stray animal population management in Thailand.

Mr. Apisak Khunwet, Head of Animal Health, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health (Thailand), stated: "This collaboration reflects our long-term commitment to advancing the veterinary profession and developing animal healthcare services in Thailand. It allows Boehringer Ingelheim to combine scientific expertise with professional experience to elevate standards of pet care, while also addressing critical public health issues such as stray animals and rabies. The 'NEXT Level Vet' Xpert' initiative is a testament to our dedication to empowering veterinarians and improving the quality of life for pets in meaningful ways."

Prof. Dr. Korakot Nganvongpanit, Dean of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chiang Mai University, added: "Our collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim marks a significant opportunity to strengthen the faculty's capacity in education, clinical services, and community engagement. Amid the growing pet population and rising demand for veterinary services in Chiang Mai, the Faculty remains committed to advancing animal welfare standards and training the next generation of veterinarians to meet these needs. This partnership will be instrumental in driving the Thai veterinary profession toward international standards."

The initiative "The NEXT Level Vet' Xpert: More Health, One Mission" reflects the joint vision of Boehringer Ingelheim and Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to elevate the veterinary profession, enhance animal health and welfare, and contribute to a healthier society. By combining global expertise with local experience, the collaboration lays a solid foundation for a stronger, more resilient, and sustainable future for veterinary medicine in Thailand.
