Sahaviriya Steel Industries Public Company Limited, or SSI, reaffirmed its leadership role in Thailand's steel industry by hosting the "SSI GREEN STEEL SUPPLY CHAIN FORUM 2026" for the first time. The forum marked a strategic step toward building a systematic green steel supply chain across upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors. During the event, SSI announced the successful production and delivery of low carbon hot rolled coil products to customers for the first time in Thailand, and officially introduced the "SSI GREEN" label for environmentally friendly steel products, supporting Thailand's national Net Zero target by 2050.
The event was honored by Dr. Natthapol Rangsitpol, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, who presided over the opening ceremony, together with Ms. Arada Fuangtong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade. Also in attendance were Mr. Ekniti Romyanon, Secretary-General of the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), senior government executives, as well as partners, trading counterparts, and customers from both domestic and international markets, totaling 19 organizations. A key highlight of the event was the delivery of low carbon emission steel products manufactured from low carbon emission slabs under the JGreeX(TM) platform of JFE Steel Corporation to Thai Koon Group. This milestone reflects the tangible capability of Thailand's steel industry to develop and deploy low carbon emission steel products at a commercial scale, while simultaneously enhancing environmental transparency and strengthening competitiveness amid increasingly stringent global environmental standards.
Dr. Natthapol stated that amid intensifying global trade competition and increasingly stringent sustainability-driven regulations—such as the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)—Thailand's steel industry must accelerate its transition toward systematic carbon management. The collaboration led by SSI and strategic partners across the supply chain reflects tangible progress toward cleaner and more sustainable steel production. The Ministry of Industry is driving sustainable industrial growth through a four-dimensional framework focusing on: (1) business success; (2) community stewardship; (3) international environmental standards; and (4) income distribution—supporting local economies and sustainable livelihoods. In parallel, the Ministry is also strengthening greenhouse gas measurement and reporting standards through TISI to ensure data credibility, transparency, and international alignment.
Ms. Arada Fuangtong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, noted that the launch of SSI's low carbon emission steel products represents a significant milestone amid evolving global trade barriers, both tariff and non-tariff. The Ministry of Commerce remains committed to supporting Thai manufacturers in enhancing competitiveness and value creation through green industry development, positioning "Made in Thailand" products as symbols of sustainability in global markets.
Mr. Win Viriyaprapaikit, Group Chief Executive Officer of SSI, emphasized that steel remains a fundamental pillar of infrastructure and economic development. The forum served as a collaborative platform for industry partners sharing a common objective to reduce carbon dioxide emissions across the entire steel value chain—from raw materials and production to processing, logistics, and end-use—through measurable, verifiable, and internationally aligned practices. The successful application of SSI's low carbon emission steel products in Thailand by Thaikoon Group marks a significant milestone for the Thai steel industry.
"SSI is firmly committed to advancing the SSI Green Steel Supply Chain in a concrete and systematic manner through continuous improvements in production processes, increased use of clean energy, recycling, and the application of circular economy principles. These efforts are aimed at delivering low carbon steel products to the market, together with the pursuit of environmental certifications for key products—including Carbon Footprint Labels and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)—under the SSI GREEN designation.
The realization of this initiative relies on close collaboration among partners across the entire value chain, as well as support from both the public and private sectors. In this regard, SSI extends its appreciation to upstream and downstream partners, including JFE Steel Corporation, Thai Koon Group, and all partner organizations, for their collective contribution to strengthening the long-term, sustainable global competitiveness of Thailand's steel industry," said the Group CEO of SSI.
"SSI GREEN" represents not only an environmental initiative, but a fundamental shift in how the steel industry operates—reducing environmental impact through cleaner production, transparent and verifiable emissions measurement, and leveraging steel as part of the solution to global sustainability challenges.
