ETDA Launches AI Governance Week 2026 From Policy to Practice, Positioning Thailand as a Regional AI Governance Hub

Press Releases »

The Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA), under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, will host the second annual AI Governance Week 2026 (AIGW 2026), reaffirming Thailand's readiness to become a regional hub for AI Governance and a center for AI expertise. The initiative will be driven by the AI Governance Center (AIGC), which is set to become the AI Governance Practice Center (AIGPC) to support the responsible adoption of AI across organizations and at the national level. The event, taking place from June 29 to July 3, 2026, will bring together experts and stakeholders from the public and private sectors, academia, the financial sector, the justice system, and civil society.

Ms. Rojana Lamlert, Director of the AI Governance Center (AIGC) under the ETDA , said that ETDA has continuously advanced AI Governance through the Artificial Intelligence Governance Center (AIGC), a key national mechanism for building AI knowledge and capacity. The center develops best practices, tools, and recommendations on AI Governance while providing training, consultation, and collaboration opportunities with government agencies, the private sector, academic institutions, and international organizations. These efforts aim to support the safe, responsible, and internationally aligned use of AI in Thailand. As AI transitions from an emerging technology to a practical tool used across sectors, the challenge has shifted from understanding "what AI Governance is" to determining "how organizations can implement it effectively." The upgrade from AIGC to the AI Governance Practice Center (AIGPC) marks an important step in transforming policy into action so that organizations can design and manage AI systems according to their specific contexts, readiness, and risk profiles.

As an operational hub for AI Governance, AIGPC will connect international principles and knowledge with tool development, best practices, training, advisory services, and practical experimentation. It will support organizations throughout the AI Governance lifecycle, from readiness assessments and risk analysis to impact assessments, governance design, and post-deployment monitoring. The center will also support countries in the region in adapting AI Governance to their own circumstances rather than being modeled after a specific country. Countries and organizations differ in their legal frameworks, infrastructure, technological capabilities, and risk environments. AI Governance is, therefore, not a one-size-fits-all formula but an approach that must be practical, context-based, and sustainable.

"AIGPC is a major step in positioning Thailand as a regional AI Governance hub. It will connect global expertise with tool development, practices, and support mechanisms to push for responsible AI in Thailand and across the region," said the Head of AIGC.

Regarding the status of AIGPC, ETDA is restructuring the center's mission and operations to support its new role as a regional AI Governance center. ETDA is also working toward the long-term goal of establishing AIGPC as a UNESCO Category 2 Center. The process, expected to continue through early 2028, includes feasibility studies, committee reviews, and UNESCO's evaluation process. Nevertheless, ETDA remains committed to delivering practical outcomes in AI Governance starting today.

This commitment will be demonstrated through AI Governance Week 2026 (AIGW 2026), which will take place from June 29 to July 3, 2026. The opening day, June 29, will feature the AIGPC Annual Conference, a key platform for outlining Thailand's next steps in building a trustworthy, secure, and responsible AI ecosystem. The conference will highlight the role of AIGPC as a central mechanism for connecting global expertise with practical tools, best practices, and implementation support that organizations can apply in real-world settings.

Join us in exploring how governments, organizations, and all sectors of society can put AI Governance into practice and unlock AI's potential in a safe, transparent, responsible, and trustworthy manner.
