St. George's University Addresses Thailand's Frontline Medical Demands by Preparing Next-Generation Emergency Doctors

Press Releases »

In Thailand, emergency medicine is a vital frontline specialty as the country manages an ageing population, rising rates of non-communicable diseases, and road traffic incidents. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Thailand records an estimated 18,218 road traffic deaths, averaging approximately 50 deaths per day, with motorcyclists accounting for more than 80% of fatalities.

St. George's University Addresses Thailand's Frontline Medical Demands by Preparing Next-Generation Emergency Doctors

With local emergency systems facing rising pressures, St. George's University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, highlights the critical role of emergency medicine specialists in supporting frontline healthcare systems and rapid response patient care in Thailand and offers Thai students' pathways to vital international clinical training.

Emergency medicine requires physicians to quickly assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of acute illnesses, traumas, and cardiac crises under intense pressure. Unlike other specialties, emergency medicine demands that doctors make rapid, critical decisions while treating patients from diverse age groups and backgrounds.

While the profession is widely respected for its impact and fast-paced environment, it is also recognized as one of the most demanding fields in healthcare. Long shifts, high patient volumes, and exposure to traumatic situations require physicians to develop resilience, adaptability, and strong decision-making skills.

Dr. Tanapol Phewpun, a Doctor of Medicine graduate from Thailand (MD'24), said, "Emergency medicine drew me in with its fast pace, variety, and the opportunity to make a critical difference in people's lives during their most vulnerable moments. During clinical rotations at various SGU-affiliated hospitals across New York and New Jersey, I was inspired by the resilience of emergency teams and the immediacy of care. I look forward to training in a high-acuity, urban setting that aligns with my passion for serving diverse and underserved populations. I envision using this training to advocate for equitable care, improve access in under-resourced communities, and continue responding with empathy, precision, and calm in the most urgent moments of need."

Kevin Romao, Regional Director, Asia at SGU said, "Through SGU's extensive network of over 75 affiliated hospitals and health centers in the United States and United Kingdom, we provide SGU medical students who are on the MD program with hands-on, real-world clinical experience. This international exposure to different healthcare systems and patient demographics builds the adaptability and clinical confidence for students who plan to return home and make a lasting impact on Thailand's frontline emergency care."

Dr. Tanapol also mentioned that for Thai students considering this career path, emergency medicine offers broad clinical exposure and opportunities to utilize advanced healthcare technologies, including simulation-based learning and telemedicine. SGU plays a critical role in training these future specialists, equipping them with the clinical fundamentals and global perspective needed to excel in fast-paced clinical environments.
