The University of Phayao is moving forward with the development of an innovative "Smart Algae Farming System" aimed at transforming future food production through the integration of Smart IoT technology and automated management systems. The initiative enhances production efficiency, reduces operational costs, and creates sustainable income opportunities for local communities amid growing concerns over food security and rising agricultural production costs.

The project is being carried out under the research project entitled "Development of Technologies and Innovations for Future Foods to Enhance a Sustainable Economy in Mae Puem Community, Phayao Province." The project is led by Assistant Professor Dr. Sutham Arun, Project Director, together with a team of faculty members and researchers from the School of Engineering. The research team has actively transferred knowledge and technology to local residents at Ban Pong Kluea Community Enterprise, Mae Puem Subdistrict, Mueang Phayao District, Phayao Province, which serves as the pilot area for the smart algae farming system. Assistant Professor Dr. Sutham Arun, Head of the Research Project from School of Engineering, University of Phayao, explained that many farmers continue to face challenges related to inconsistent production standards, difficulties in controlling water quality and temperature, and limited access to modern technology and management data. These issues often result in high production costs and unstable yields. In response, the research team developed the smart algae farming system to address these agricultural pain points while supporting the development of "future food" that is both highly nutritious and environmentally friendly.

The innovation consists of three major systems: a Smart IoT and environmental control greenhouse system capable of monitoring temperature, water quality, and lighting conditions in real time; an automated nutrient supply system that minimizes human error in cultivation management; and a bubble-cleaning system designed to reduce contamination and improve production quality standards.

Implementation of the system within the community has demonstrated significant success. Production costs were reduced by approximately 10 percent, while yield quality became more consistent and manageable. Farmers have also been able to generate higher income and further develop value-added processed products from algae. The project additionally achieved a Social Return on Investment (SROI) value of 3.81, reflecting the strong social and economic impact of innovation-driven community development.

The project also highlights the University of Phayao's commitment to advancing the Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG Economy Model) by promoting the efficient use of biological resources, environmentally friendly production processes, and circular economic value creation within local communities. The smart algae farming innovation demonstrates how technology can strengthen grassroots economies while supporting sustainable agricultural transformation.

Ms. Piyachat Khamwang, President of Ban Pong Kluea Community Enterprise (Nilla Phayao), stated that the "smart algae," locally known as Phum, Khai Nam, or Wolffia, is one of the world's smallest flowering aquatic plants and is considered a highly nutritious superfood. The project utilizes the "Globosa" strain sourced from the Chiang Rai Provincial Fisheries Department. Wolffia contains more than 40-45 percent protein by dry weight—higher than many conventional protein sources such as eggs or meat—and is rich in vitamins A, B12, and C, as well as iron, which supports immunity and blood health.

The algae can be consumed fresh or processed into a variety of food products. Today, the community enterprise has successfully developed value-added products such as cookies, snacks, and crispy crackers made from Wolffia. These products have already received FDA, GAP, and GMP certifications. Interest among local residents continues to grow, with more than 20 households currently participating in the initiative across Mueang Phayao, Phu Sang, and Chiang Kham districts.

Beyond economic benefits, the project aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 13: Climate Action. By promoting sustainable future food production and environmentally responsible agricultural innovation, the initiative contributes to long-term food security and climate resilience.

The University of Phayao expects the smart algae farming system to become a model for modern agricultural innovation in Thailand, integrating research, technology, and community participation to strengthen food sustainability, elevate local economies, and expand sustainable agricultural development to other regions nationwide.
