Thai Footwear Association in conjunction with Thai Leathergoods Association and Thai Tanning Industry Association, Department of Industry Promotion, Ministry of Industry speed up the development of Thai products to lessen the needs to depend on the imported goods and build Thai brands, which is in line with the goal of Bangkok to become the regional fashion hub in 2005.

Mr. Surasak Pongtawiwerat, President of Thai Footwear Association revealed that the association has cooperated with Thai Leathergoods Association, Thai Tanning Industry Association and Department of Industry Promotion, Ministry of Industry in organizing the design technology transfer campaign under the Industrial Restructure Plan Phase 2 during the year 2003 for the industrial operators. The objective is to develop the Thai leather design personnel to be able to compete with the leading world designers, which would alleviate the dependency on the overseas design and products. It would build up Thai brands in the international arena as well as develop the variety of leather and shoe products in consistent with the goal to build Bangkok as the regional fashion hub in 2005.

The design technology transfer campaign would enable the Thai designers to become at the forefront in the regional level in ASEAN. It also would be the networking venue between the Thai designers and the leather export manufacturers, said Mr. Surasak.

The main activities of this project divided into 2 levels: basic course and advance course conducted by both domestic and overseas specialists in the leather field. The courses are suitable for the domestic operators of shoes and leather goods, designers and general public who are interested in the leather shoes and products production.

The President of Thai Footwear Association added the export value of leather shoes and leather products amounted over 50,000 million baht per annum with over 500 operators. However 50% of the industry is the contract manufacturing for international brand names due to the lack of designer development to be competent in the product design compatible to the international standard quality.

This resulted in the lack of competence to become the global leader in the leather goods industry despite being the underdog only to Italy.

Developing Thailand to become the world class leather production hub according to the industry restructure plan would require the personnel improvement with emphasize on increasing the skill and knowledge in the evolution and trend of leather fashion industry so as to be able to analyze the trend and strategy for more effective product design, said Thai Footwear Association President.
