Series of Allied Telesyn’s products as end-to-end infrastructure for new Campus Village student housing in San Jose, California.
Allied Telesyn, one of the world’s leading companies in the networking industry, today announced that San Jose State University (SJSU) has chosen a series of Allied Telesyn products as the end-to-end infrastructure for their new Campus Village student housing in San Jose, California, USA.
The order, which began shipping in March, includes twenty iMAP 9700 series integrated Multiservice Access Platforms, 2,500 iMG613 intelligent Multiservice Gateways, and a variety of advanced switching solutions, including the AT-8948, AT-9924T and AT-9924SP Layer 3 switches. Additionally, the university has contracted with Allied Telesyn for a full complement of ongoing professional services.
"We chose Allied Telesyn for two reasons," said SJSU's Chief Network Engineer Art Mimnaugh Jr. "The first was the technology. We wanted a tested solution from a vendor that was already proven in this space. Allied Telesyn has deployed these networks, and already knows the technology inside out. The second was support. We wanted more than just a vendor -- we wanted a partner. Allied Telesyn's ongoing support and involvement have been phenomenal. From the RFP stage forward, they've been head and shoulders above anyone else."
For this high-profile win, Allied Telesyn competed in a blind bid against some of the top industry players. Says Allied Telesyn's Deputy Managing Director South Asia, MY Fung, "This is a showcase project, not just for us, but for the university. It will serve as a model for other universities in the States and even in the Asia Pacific region, who are considering the benefits of IP Triple Play.
"We won the project not only through the quality of our technical solution," says Fung, "but through the high calibre of our sales and support offering." SJSU had originally planned to install a combination of CAT 5 and coaxial cable into the new construction. Allied Telesyn's solution convinced them of the benefits of a complete Ethernet/IP-over-fiber solution for data, voice-over-IP, and video.
The Campus Village is a 15-story building with two 7-storey wings. In SJSU's words: "Campus Village is a cutting-edge residential community with world-class amenities, including high-speed Internet access, video on-demand, computer lab, convenience store and an interactive gaming centre." With 933 three- or four-bedroom apartment suites, it will house more than 2,279 students and staff. Additionally, the network will support an administrative staff of 150+ enterprise users.
Allied Telesyn's Professional Services group will install iMAPs into four BDFs (Bulding Distribution Frame), one MPOE (Main Point of Entry) and one server room. An Allied Telesyn Resident Engineer will live on campus to maintain the system 24 hours a day, with supplemental support as required. In a groundbreaking deal that is designed to reduce CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) and up front deployment costs for the University, Allied Telesyn offered SJSU a unique subscriber-based cost structure, for both services and infrastructure equipment. 3-5 iMGs were installed into each suite in time for students to begin moving in on 15 July.
