Bangkok--Mar 4--Lucent Technologies
Lucent Technologies today announced the opening of an Asia/Pacific Logistics Centre to support the customers of its Power Systems business in the region. This makes Lucent among the pioneering companies here to support the Economic Development Board's strategic positioning of Singapore as the logistics distribution hub of the region.
Lucent Technologies Singapore Private Ltd. said it will contract with AEI Warehousing & Distribution (S) Pte Ltd (AEI) to provide regional order entry and distribution capability through the centre. By shifting distribution from the United States to Singapore, interval times on standard Power Systems products are expected to improve by more than 50 percent for regional customers. The Asia/Pacific Logistics Centre reinforces the growth and multi-local strategies of Lucent. In addition to the expansion of regional sales and technical support personnel in the Power Systems business last year, two Power Systems manufacturing and operations centers were established in Qingdao, China, and Bangalore, India.
"We selected Singapore for our Logistics Centre as our multi-local business strategy fits in with that of the Economic Development Board's aim to establish Singapore as a regional distribution hub," said William Yeates, managing director (Asia/Pacific region), Power Systems. "We are confident that the excellent communications and infrastructural support available here will ensure the success of the Logistics Centre in meeting the needs of our customers in Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, Indonesia and Singapore."
The logistics centre will support Power Systems' Energy Solutions product family for telecommunications applications. The centre's flexible design will allow for maximum efficiencies in the storage and handling of other power systems products in the future.
"We are bringing customer service closer to our Southeast Asian customers, said Jay Walters, vice president, global development and operations for Lucent's Power Systems business. By taking advantage of the skilled resources of AEI in Singapore, we will better service our customers with in- region stock and improve distribution interval time. "
Lucent's Power Systems manufacturing headquarters in Mesquite, Texas, was awarded the Deming Prize for Quality in 1994 and remains the first and only manufacturer in the United States to have achieved the honour. Power Systems was ranked first in total worldwide sales of power equipment in 1996, according to Micro-Tech Consultants, a market research firm specializing in power supplies.
Lucent Technologies has extensive investments in Singapore. Recently, it signed a US$1 billion-plus joint venture contract with Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. to manufacture integrated circuits. Lucent Singapore has approximately 1,400 employees, with a Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group semiconductor assembly and test facility and a Bell Laboratories research and development facility located here. Other Lucent businesses operating in Singapore include the Global Service Provider Business, Wireless Networks, Network Products, Business Communications Systems, Data Networking Systems, Optical Networking, and Switching and Access Systems.
