Kodak and Seagate Improve 'Bridge' Between PCs and Advanced Photo System

Bangkok--Sep 23--Kodak Recently Eastman Kodak Company and Seagate Technology, Inc. today announced they have formed an alliance to create and refine an improved technology bridge between the Advanced Photo System (APS) and the personal computer. The alliance plays directly to the strengths of both companies. Seagate is the world's leading supplier of information storage devices, with considerable technological capabilities in global manufacturing, vertical integration and engineering expertise. Kodak is the world's largest imaging company whose work increasingly involves digital technology, combining the power and convenience of electronics with the quality of traditional photography. Under the companies' agreement, Seagate will be exclusively licensed to manufacture and sell Advantix film drives, and will market the products to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of personal computers as an in-bay product and external peripheral. The alliance encompasses aspects of marketing, manufacturing and sales, and at the same time, the two companies will work to develop the next generation of film drives. With the Advantix film drive, users can enjoy all the benefits of digital imaging-including e-mailing their pictures, editing images and designing customized picture creations and produce high-quality output at the desktop or from their photo retailer. That information could be in the form of a picture or a thousand words; what is important is that it's the Seagate will manage its Advantix activities within the Removable Storage Solutions group, based in Costa Mesa, CA. Kodak is already marketing two Advantix film drive models and software that scan the negatives in Advanced Photo System cassettes, which are drop-in loaded film cartridges, and upload the images into a PC. There, computer users can manipulate the images to eliminate red-eye, crop and correct color, as well as specify any of the three APS print formats. Once an APS image is in a computer, use A more sophisticated model of the film drive (shipping early next year) will electronically write a title and date as well as cropping, print format and size and reprint quantity information back to the negatives in the APS cassette. The user, having set up the custom order at home, can then take the cassette to a photofinisher where the images can be printed as traditional photographs or enlargements. Seagate Technology, Inc.
