Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced its newly formed division, InterNetworking Systems Unit in the Thai market. This unit is a result of Lucent Technologies merger with Ascend Communications completed in late June 1999.
“The merger with Ascend creates the industry s broadest, most powerful and most reliable data networking product line. It is a strategic move in making Lucent a leader in the new age of communications networking,” said Tony Wise, vice president, Lucent InterNetworking Systems Asia Pacific. “Lucent now stands head and shoulders above the competition in its ability to deliver end-to-end, communications networks to service providers and enterprises.”
Lucent s InterNetworking Systems is focused on the fastest-growing markets such as optical networking, data networking, software, wireless, network management and professional services and support in the communications networking industry. Lucent provides networking solutions which incorporate innovations by the company s own research and development arm, Bell Laboratories.
The New Leadership in Thailand
Lucent today also announced the appointment of Kenneth Kan as managing director, South East Asia, InterNetworking Systems Unit, Lucent Technologies Asia Pacific. Based in Singapore, Kan will lead overall data networking efforts addressing service provider and enterprise markets in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Indonesia in the InterNetworking Systems business which will lead to continuous growth and profitability in the Asia Pacific region. Prior to his appointment, Kan was general manager, South East Asia Operations, for Ascend Communications Pte Ltd. Kan was responsible for sales and marketing operations in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, the ASEAN countries and Indo-China.
“With existing networks evolving to broadband, the combination of Lucent and Ascend positions us as the leader in delivering the next generation of broadband networking. The merger was brought about by customers strong needs for voice/data convergence solutions. We now form a strong team for the convergence of voice and data, to lead the next generation networking in Thailand,” Wise added.
Lucent s InterNetworking Systems Unit consists of Ascend Communications and Lucent s Data Networking Systems unit. The InterNetworking Systems Unit has a total of 8,000 employees worldwide. In Asia Pacific, this new unit has more than 300 staff specialists. The unit offers products and services directly to customers as well as through channel partners that have helped it to achieve a leading position in Thailand. The InternetWorking Systems Unit partners with Lucent s Optical Networking Systems and Communications Software Group to form the Broadband Network Group to deliver broadband multi-service networking solutions.
