Services Throughout the Metro and Multi-Tenant Building Markets
SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 6 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ -- Building on its strategy to enable service providers to construct high-capacity data-optimized optical networks based on Ethernet and IP, Extreme Networks (Nasdaq: EXTR) is introducing two new switching solutions that bring new services to broadband points of presence (POPs) in the Metro and multi-tenant building markets. The new Summit1i and Summit5i Gigabit Ethernet switching systems eliminate the limitations associated with multiple narrowband aggregation technologies traditionally used in Metro POPs.
As Metro Area Networks evolve to handling more data rather than voice, the POP must also progress from serving as a simple transport device to an application services tool. Today's broadband POPs are moving closer to the customer and need to offer services density and scalability without re-engineering discreet narrowband technologies. There is a growing need for consistent scalable services in the multi-tenant market, which according to Cahner's InStat Group will reach $2 billion by 2004.
"The POP will be the jack in the wall, the switch in the basement or the switch in the co-location rack," said George Prodan, vice president of marketing for Extreme Networks. "Because the POP can be anywhere in the Metro, multi-tenant building networks or the Internet, switching solutions must be capable of delivering consistent services and performance at any point in the network, all the way to edge. We are the only vendor to offer this capability."
"The key to our success is the ability to quickly deliver content and applications to the edge of the network, said," Rich Paret, Network Engineer of Adero, Inc., a Boston-based leading provider of global content distribution services designed for e-business. "The Extreme Networks solution allows us to operate high availability POPs with lower cost of ownership by concentrating key networks services into a single switch."
Ethernet Service Provisioning Switches
The new Summit1i and Summit5i build upon Extreme Networks optical Gigabit Ethernet networking solution. Extreme Networks is the only data communications company to offer all key services in the core, distribution and edge of the Metro network. These switches provide different form factors suited for the density and capacity requirements of the multi-tenant building market. The services, include:
-- Tiered Bandwidth Services
-- IP time-division multiplexing (IP TDM): IP TDM adds circuit emulation capabilities to Layer 3 IP, allowing fixed, guaranteed latency circuits to be set up for voice and video traffic over the wide area network for the first time.
-- Bandwidth-by-the-slice: service providers can maximize revenue by selling incremental bandwidth with service level agreement engineering. Bidirectional rate limiting allocates available Ethernet capacity into fixed increments for customer traffic segmentation of applications, users, Internet and VPNs.
-- vMAN services: provide the flexibility of creating virtual private network connections across a single metropolitan area network, in a similar way that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) deliver VPNs. The result is fully secure and transparent LAN service very similar to an ATM PVC, but delivered with frame-based Ethernet.
-- Usage-based billing with integrated ASIC-based IP flow accounting: provides the key instrumentation needed to charge on the basis of how much capacity is used by traffic type.
-- Provisioning interfaces: support software tools for configuration workflow automation used in service activation. This enables the service provider to tie the Extreme Networks solution into Customer Management and Billing (CMB) Systems.
The new switching systems begin shipping in July. Pricing for the Summit1i starts at $8,795 and $10,995 for the Summit5i.
