Bangkok--May 30--SHIN SATELLITE Shin Satellite Public Company Limited today disclosed the company has signed a Thaicom Satellite Service Contract and a Procurement Contract with Bagan Cybertech IDC &Teleport, Myanmar (Bagan) to purchase a complete iPSTAR system package, including an iPSTAR gateway and 5,000 terminals. Bagan is planning to urgently deploy and implement iPSTAR ground system with Thaicom Satellite for the provision of rural telephony services throughout Myanmar by the fourth quarter of 2002. Bagan Cybertech is a semi-government full service telecommunications company in Myanmar offering VSAT services, high speed Internet and Intranet connectivity as well as a national rural telephony project in conjunction with Myanma Post and Telecom (MPT). Customers include banks, government offices, international companies, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), educational institutions and hospitals. Under the contact, Shin Satellite and Bagan will jointly set up the iPSTAR gateway in Myanmar, while Bagan will be responsible for its operation and maintenance. The gateway is expected to come on line by the fourth quarter of 2002. The first 200 of 5,000 iPSTAR user terminals will be adopted for rural telephony services using the current gateway at the Thaicom Teleport and DTH Center, Lad Lum Kaew, Pathumthani. The deployment of iPSTAR will allow Bagan to provide services via satellite covering the whole of the telecommunication infrastructure in Myanmar, regardless of the terrain. The iPSTAR system uses the most advanced technology available, providing extremely advanced satellite technology with Internet Protocol-based applications that will serve the urgent national needs for basic telephony services in rural areas in Myanmar. Dr. Ye Naing Wynn, Chief Executive Officer of Bagan, noted that, "We have confidence in iPSTAR technology and will deploy iPSTAR user terminals for four major projects, including a rural telephony project for more than 3,000 villages that still have no communication services. We are targeting installation in 500 villages in the first year. Another project is a Corporate and Government Virtual IP Network, which will be able to supply the demand for communications in the future. iPSTAR will allow the broadband Internet access as the primary medium for both business and home users, especially outside Yangon and Mandalay. Lastly, iPSTAR will support E-education and Interactive Distance Learning including connectivity between more than 300 schools nationwide equipped with multimedia classrooms and more schools to be connected in the following years. Mr. Yongsit Rojsrivichaikul, Vice President of Shin Satellite, said, "We are proud that Bagan has chosen iPSTAR to help develop the communications service in Myanmar. We feel that the system is now reaching a consensus of approval in Asia, that it can play an important role both in developing the basic communications infrastructure and advanced broadband telecommunication and Internet services for a reasonable price.
