Enables service providers to cost-effectively manage and support migration to IP over Optics
ECI Telecom Ltd. (NASDAQ: ECIL) today announced the expansion of its Optical Transport Network (OTN) solution to include the new XDM?-40 optical metro access and Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) platform. The flexible, standards-based OTN solution now offers an end-to-end portfolio that is specifically designed to address the growing demand for both triple-play service delivery and broadband business data transport. It gives service providers the flexibility to take full advantage of their existing networks while providing a smooth and fully supported migration to IP over Optics.
According to Ovum-RHK's February 2006 OTN Report, the OTN market, long dormant after the tech bubble burst, is set for a big comeback. "About $3 billion of the roughly $11 billion spent on Optical Networks in 2005 was addressable by OTN-capable products; the opportunity will increase substantially over the next five years." According to Dana Cooperson, VP Optical Networking at Ovum-RHK, "As network operators have increased network investments over the past two years, and as service bandwidths and transport pipes are getting larger, OTN has reemerged as a "must have" technology, particularly in the core."
This solution is managed end-to-end from the optical layer via ECI's LightSoft network management system, enabling service providers to easily manage and provision new services. The XDM-40 integrates OTN transponders and combiners in a small and cost-effective package, enabling carriers to build more network functionality into optical networks. The flexibility and scalability of the XDM-40, as well as the other members of the XDM family, extend ECI's OTN solution from the Regional and Long haul core into the Metro access layer and business CPE while significantly reducing transport costs.
The XDM-40 features high availability from CWDM to DWDM including pluggable optics. It also offers WDM capabilities, optimal support for 1G and 10G Ethernet, Storage extension and support for SDH/SONET all on a single platform. The XDM-40 uses the same universal modular service card that is used in other members of the XDM family. This unique card design enables in-field configuration to support any service both at the line side and client side, rendering the XDM easy to deploy, operate and maintain. Combined with ECI's unique compact full C-band tunable lasers for both 2.5G and 10G wavelengths, the XDM also offers unrivalled saving in spare parts.
"With these new enhanced capabilities, ECI now offers a groundbreaking core to metro access OTN solution that is the first of its kind. We feel confident it will have a great influence on the growing OTN market and that it will position ECI as a leader in next generation WDM and OTN networks," said Eyal Shaked, Executive Vice President and General Manager of ECI Telecom's Optical Networking Division. "We are seeing significant interest in the XDM-40 and the complete OTN solution from major service providers. It has already provided us an entry point into several strategic accounts."
