DHL carries “Flame of Hope” for Law Enforcement Torch Run around the World to China for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced a global partnership with Special Olympics International, by providing logistics support for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, and the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, USA. The partnership between DHL and Special Olympics marks the first time that the “Flame of Hope,” which is traditionally carried by law enforcement personnel and Special Olympics athletes, will be transported globally prior to reaching the Opening Ceremony of the 2007 World Summer Games on 2 October 2007. The Special Olympics Flame of Hope was express delivered to London by DHL for a torch lighting ceremony and run through the capital, on the third stop of the Flame of Hope’s first international journey across five continents in the lead up to the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai. Special Olympics athletes accepted the Flame of Hope on behalf of the City of London at a special Torch Lighting Ceremony at City Hall beside London’s iconic Tower Bridge, to kick off the London leg of the International Torch Run. They were joined by Mr. Zhou Taitong, Vice Mayor of Shanghai and Executive Vice Chairman of the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games Organising Committee, Madam Fu Ying, the Chinese Ambassador to Great Britain, and Lawrie McMenemy, the Chairman of Special Olympics Great Britain. The Flame of Hope, carried by Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement representatives from both Great Britain and China, moved from Tower Bridge by boat along the River Thames to Westminster, past Trafalgar Square and onto Chinatown and Leicester Square. London is one of the international cities across the world to play host to the International Torch Run. The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai will host 7,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities from more than 160 countries and regions. The Torch Run is Special Olympics’ largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle, with the objective of showcasing the unification of society and the inclusive nature of Special Olympics. For more than 25 years, the “Flame of Hope,” which symbolizes the courage and celebrates the diversity represented by the Special Olympics movement, has been traditionally lit in Athens, Greece, and then carried to the site of the Special Olympics World Games. During the 2007 Law Enforcement Torch Run, the “Flame of Hope” has been lit on 29 June in the ancient Olympic tradition on the Sacred Site of Pnyx (facing the Acropolis of Athens), marking the beginning of the Torch Run. The journey of the flame began by a Torch Run of Special Olympics Athletes and law enforcement officers to the Chinese Embassy in Athens. The flame will then travel from Athens around the world for three months before arriving in China for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, where it will be used to ignite the giant Special Olympics Cauldron at the Opening Ceremony. DHL will leverage its network of hubs and gateways to move the “Flame of Hope” across these cities using a combination of cargo planes and DHL vehicles or boats to ceremony locations in each host city. The three-month global Torch Run is a joint effort of Special Olympics International, the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games Steering Committee and DHL. In the tradition of Special Olympics, the ceremony will be graced by heads of state, international sports figures and celebrities. As with all shipments, the torch will be tracked and traced by DHL’s Quality Control Centres and scanned at each exit and entry point during the Torch Run. DHL has overcome a range of challenges from logistical to transportation issues, local customs procedures to regulations requiring the flame to be transferred from the Special Olympics Torch to a miner’s lamp for all international transfers. The lamp is filled with 150 ml of standard lamp oil, which is in the form of liquid paraffin, approved by Civil Aviation authorities, and needs to be refilled every 24 hours. After the World Summer Games in Shanghai, the 2007 flame will reside at DHL headquarters in tribute to the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. In 2009, the “Flame of Hope” will again be lit in Athens and make its voyage by DHL across the globe to the 2009 Special Olympics Winter Games in Idaho. In addition, DHL is a Global Supporter of Special Olympics International and will also deliver equipment for the Opening Ceremony. A host of activities for DHL staff will be organized at a global level to spur volunteerism, involving employees to create public awareness to promote inclusion and acceptance. DHL employee volunteers, together with their families and customers, will join the athletes and law enforcement officers in the cities where the Torch Runs are held. DHL is an active participant in the global sporting scene and has, over the last 12 months, sponsored several world-renowned sporting events, including NBA, FIFA World Cup 2006, American “Major League Baseball”, Formula One and the New Zealand Lions Tour. Moving the “Flame of Hope” for Special Olympics and providing logistics support to Special Olympics is another of DHL’s contributions to sports. QUOTES “DHL’s sponsorship endorses Special Olympics as the catalyst for social change by promoting fair opportunities and supporting diversity, which is part of our corporate values. We hope to reinforce the spirit of determination, mental endurance and physical stamina among individuals, including our staff.” Just as the Special Olympics athletes triumph over all obstacles to compete on world stage, DHL is committed to overcome logistics challenges to move the flame around the globe, sharing the vision of hope with the Special Olympics athletes.” Dan McHugh, Senior Vice President, Commercial, DHL Express Asia Pacific “We are pleased to tap on our wide network and expertise to carry the “Flame of Hope” across the world to China. This is in line with our First in China strategy which demonstrates our confidence in achieving even better results and delivering our long-term commitment to the Chinese market through enhanced investment and partnership.” Jerry Hsu, President –Greater China Area, DHL Express Asia Pacific “Special Olympics provides a unique platform for acceptance and inclusion, and the “Flame of Hope’s” journey around the world is symbolic of our mission to not only give new hope to Special Olympics athletes and their families, but also to break down barriers and create awareness for social change around the world. We are pleased to be partnering with DHL to help us honor our athletes for their tremendous courage and commitment—on the field of play and in every aspect of their lives.” Timothy Shriver, Chairman, Special Olympics “Through the partnership with DHL, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will be able to raise awareness for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games among a global audience and deliver the Special Olympics spirit of ‘equality, inclusion and acceptance’ around the world. The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai will demonstrate empowerment and care given to people with intellectual disabilities by the whole society in China, and let the world hail Special Olympics athletes' courage and achievement.” Dr. Derong Shi, Deputy Secretary General, 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games Steering Committee “The event was of special significance to the staff of DHL UK: transporting and maintaining the Flame of Hope on its journey around the world is an exciting challenge for our team, and we were very glad to have a group of UK staff take part in the London Torch Lighting Ceremony, alongside the Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement professionals from Great Britain and China.” Chris Muntwyler, CEO DHL Express UK and Ireland “We are proud that Great Britain and London have been chosen as one of the stops for Special Olympics International Torch Run as the Flame of Hope makes its way to Shanghai, and it is great that DHL is supporting such a worthy cause. The Great Britain team looks forward to competing for silverware at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in October.” Lawrie McMenemy, Chairman of Special Olympics Great Britain Athletes representing Special Olympics China and Great Britain hold the flame at the start of the London Torch Run Press contacts: DHL Express International (Thailand) Ltd.
