Sun Microsystems recently announced further growth in its worldwide storage business with a total revenue of more than 655 million US dollars in the last quarter of 2007. According to IDC, Sun still holds the lead in Thailand’s external Unix disk market with its market share increasing from 26.9 per cent to 35 per cent in the third quarter of 2007.
The company is also expanding its storage presence in the corporate and SME markets in Thailand with two main technologies in its Sun StorageTek product line.
Sun StorageTek 5800, or the Honeycomb, will meet corporate customers’ requirements for large-scale storage of fixed data such as those related to regulatory compliance and security systems, or historical and research records.
For growing small and medium sized businesses seeking cost-effective storage solutions, Sun is providing the ZFS file system and the JBOD storage device operating with its Solaris operating system. This will improve application capacity and large-scale data management in the data centres.
Sun has also acquired MySQL, producer of the world’s most popular database management software. This has provided Sun with a greater opportunity to tap into new markets. It has also improved the capability of its storage products and technology to work with high-performance database solutions.
“With the highest growth rate in the storage market, we now hold third place in the global market share for this segment,” said Pornchai Makaraphan, storage business development manager at Sun Microsystems (Thailand).
“We can now provide even more innovations and new technology to satisfy a wider range of customer requirements. Today we’re offering two new technological developments. The first is the Honeycomb, or Sun StorageTek 5800 suitable for storing long-term fixed-data such as regulatory and medical data. The second is the JBOD high-density external storage with the ZFS file system and Solaris operating system that enables it to work as efficiently as standard storage but at a lower cost.
“In addition, Sun’s open-source storage system will help businesses to improve their data organisation in different environments, while at the same time maximising the benefits from our storage devices including main and back-up disks and virtual disks and tapes.
“It will also enable our customers to manage data transfer more effectively, as it will automatically correspond to data categories and storage media,” said Mr Pornchai.
