Bangkok--6 Aug--Hill & Knowlton

DHL Exel Supply Chain, one of the business units of DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, recently donated 220,368 baht through Mercy Corps to help victims of Cyclone Nargis, which hit Myanmar in May. In addition to financial support, DHL Exel Supply Chain Thailand, cooperating with Women With A Mission, a nonprofit organization aiming at training and supporting women around the world to become leaders for Christ in their nations, has provided aid in the form of transportation support. Although two months have past, the impact of the cyclone is still being felt in some areas. DHL Exel Supply Chain Thailand staff donation of 220,368 baht was given to Mercy Corps to provide humanitarian assistance to cyclone survivors in restoring housing and infrastructure, as well as the provision of medical treatment and counseling. The donation will mainly be allocated to the cash-for-work and livelihood recovery programs generated to help people recover from the disaster and keep the local economies supported throughout the recovery process. These programs offer local survivors an opportunity to earn income from engaging in the restoration of their communities. “Those who survive remain in desperate need of aid, especially for rehabilitation. As a result, DHL Exel Supply Chain Thailand staff continue to respond with assistance to the victims of the catastrophe in Myanmar. We want to contribute our expertise in logistics as much as we can to help them through this tough situation,” said Steve Daniel, Senior Vice President – Indo-China and the Indian Subcontinent, DHL Exel Supply Chain Asia Pacific. By teaming up with “Women With A Mission,” DHL Exel Supply Chain Thailand also provided transport and manpower for delivering emergency supplies and other donations that will be distributed to people in the affected areas. A few weeks after the disaster, Mercy Corps shipped emergency suppliers worth US$ 1 million from Portland, Oregon to Bangkok with the help of DHL. “As part of DHL’s corporate values and sustainability program, these activities demonstrate our commitment to being a good corporate citizen by helping build the communities in which we operate and transferring logistics management know-how and sharing best practices. In particular, DHL supports efforts in disaster preparedness, emergency relief and post disaster rehabilitation,” said Mr. Daniel.
