The Department of Export Promotion, Ministry of Commerce holds the honorable 19th Prime Minister’s Export Award 2010 (PM Export Award) to encourage outstanding Thai exporters of products and services and to showcase and acknowledge their world-class quality and standards. The awards are handed out to 29 remarkable exporters with 35 prestigious awards in total with an aim to better off Thai products’ positioning in the global market as well as maintain Thai export volume and support overall domestic economy. According to this year’s economic forecast, it is expected to bring in revenue of 183,000 million USD to the country.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiwa made a speech at the ceremony “I am contented to receive such an honor to preside over this Prime Minister’s Export Award 2010. The award is not only a mere trophy showing appreciation to successful exporters; it also indicates admiration and gratitude the government has toward the exporter’s organizations as they play a considerable part in sustaining and propelling Thai economy forward. Moreover, it significantly inspires dozens of Thai entrepreneurs to seriously streamline their business, improve their labor’s skills and maximize their ability to be internationally accepted and reach global standard level.
The government is aware of the importance of Thai exportations and determined to find solutions to various issues Thai exporters have encountered as well as provide them with new opportunities. We are also exploring new markets for the exports of products and services by developing marketing strategy in collaboration with private sectors. This is aimed to seize market share in potential countries namely Eastern Europe, Middle-East and Southern Asia. We are also urging Thai entrepreneurs on internalization, advocating a fast distribution system by taking advantages of Thailand’s expedient geographical location and international transporting potential. This also includes value-added product development and privilege-seeking on both bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements for the ultimate benefits of our country.
The crux that the exporters need to focus on now is to add value to their products and services using Thai wisdom and creative economy---there are a great deal of intellectual capitals which can be observed through ancient wisdom, arts, culture and society---and to pay attention to our environment. If we can associate our products with creativity, it will impressively differentiate ours from the others in the eye of consumers. As a result, this will contribute to a rapid economic growth and sustainably creative exports.
Though the export industry was previously facing both direct and indirect impacts due to economic crisis and occasionally political instability, it managed to maintain the export rate to the satisfactory level. All sectors were to be thanked for this accomplishment, especially Ministry of Commerce that worked enthusiastically to supervise exportation into favorable directions all along.
If private sectors can consistently maintain the quality standard of their products and services as the awarded exporters do, topping up with governmental cooperation and supports from the Ministry, I am confident that Thai products will positively hit world market, create better values for our exports, help the industry surpass this year’s target and, finally, sustainably strengthen Thailand’s international trade.”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Porntiva Nakasai, Minister of Commerce, revealed that the honoring and award presenting ceremony for outstanding exporters of products and services has been held annually for 19 years. It is considered to be the Thai government’s highest official award granted in order to give moral supports to exporters who are devoted to develop their production, designing, owned brand building and services to meet international standards and pioneering new foreign market until their products and services become widely recognized, making Thailand’s exportation trusted and accepted in global market.
In the year 2010, the committee of PM Export Award 2010 has revised winning principles in accordance with Ministry of Commerce’s policies to elevate standards of Thai products and services to meet prime level. It was also intended to cover all business types and make Thai exports better recognized on international scale. “At present, the key mission that Ministry of Commerce as a unit assigned to impel Thai economy and trades is emphasizing and expediting on is to prepare the ground for Thai business owners to be ready for world economic changes. We have placed several related supportive policies such as encouraging entrepreneurs on self-education so that they are always getting updated with economic situations on both regional and worldwide basis as well as advising them to establish domestic and international alliance business network. We also try to implant creativity into Thai exporters, motivating them to think differently and creating values on their products by producing distinguishable merchandises and services that possess unique selling points. This is considered to be a part of economy and export sustainability under the governmental ‘Creative Economy’ guidelines. The policies are also implemented to maximize the competition ability of Thai product-and-service export sector by reaping benefits from international trade negotiations plus with an attempt to stimulate Thai exporters to reduce cost and manage their logistics operation efficiently. The achievements of our actions have been concretely reflected through the overall export revenue in the first six months of the year which was 93,066 million USD with an expanding export rate up to 36.6%. Ministry of Commerce has also increased 2010’s export target from 14% to 20%.
This year, Ministry of Commerce has revised PM Export Award 2010’s judging criteria to be more concordant and appropriate in each category. All aspects of business including product and service development, Thai brand image building, business operation based on corporate governance, environmental responsibility and social contribution will be taken to consideration to set up idealized standard criteria of which all Thai exporters can refer to when they want to improve their products and service to be truly and successfully accepted on international stage.
Hopefully, this PM Export Award would bring pride to all selected exporters. This trophy indicates that, on the long course of your business, you have finally reached the milestone achievement which is that your organization is domestically and internationally accepted in terms of its quality, standards and services.
