Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd. announced that the Honda Civic passed the crash test in the second phase of the ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program), a crashworthiness rating initiative conducted for vehicles sold in Southeast Asian markets. The Honda Civic achieved a 5-star safety rating, the highest rating possible, for the offset frontal crash test and also received a very high score of 82% for Child Occupant Protection (COP), which marks another milestone. Last year, the Honda City received a 5-star safety rating and the high score of 81% for child safety. Honda is very proud to deliver both 5-star rated vehicles in the small- and medium-sized passenger car category. The ASEAN NCAP crash tests were conducted by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), an agency under the Ministry of Transport. In 2011, MIROS signed a collaboration agreement with Global NCAP, a non-profit organisation which aims to reduce the number of fatalities due to traffic accidents, encourage automobile manufacturers to develop safer vehicles, and provide trustworthy information about vehicle safety performance to consumers. MIROS handles independent NCAP testing for vehicles available in the ASEAN region. In the second phase of the program, conducted between February and August 2013, the ASEAN NCAP tested a total of 11 sedan, SUV and MPV models. The Honda Civic that was produced in Thailand for export to Indonedia was selected for this test. This Honda Civic has the same safety performance as those produced and available in Thailand. Mr. Pitak Pruittisarikorn, Executive Vice President, Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd. said, “I am very pleased that the 2013 Honda Civic achieved a 5-star rating in the ASEAN NCAP Phase 2. This achievement demonstrates our commitment to deliver innovative and quality automobiles that are equipped with a high level of safety solutions to provide all passengers, both adults and children, peace of mind and safety for all of their journeys." The advanced safety systems available in the Honda Civic include the Honda G-Force Control (G-CON) body structure for frontal collision energy management and vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility, along with standard safety equipment including an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), front pretensioner seat belts, seat belt reminder systems for driver and front passenger, Dual SRS airbags, i-Side airbag, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and a new Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (MA-EPS)* system that helps the driver to mitigate oversteer or understeer situations. The ASEAN NCAP frontal offset crash test uses two crash test dummies in the driver and front passenger seats and two child dummies representing a 3-year-old and an 18-month-old in the rear seats, both using a Child Restraint System. The test car, moving at 64 km/h, impacts a deformable aluminum crash barrier to simulate an automobile collision. The results are recorded by sensors installed in both the dummies and the vehicle, then evaluated to determine the NCAP rating. * Safety equipment varies according to variants.-KP-
