InfoQuest files copyright infringement lawsuit against Bisnews AFE, Reuters' affiliate in Thailand

Press Releases »

InfoQuest Limited, Thailand's leading provider of stock and financial news and information and local operator of the “Aspen” platform, announced today it has last month filed a lawsuit against Bisnews AFE (Thailand) Limited, an affiliate of the Thomson Reuters Group, alleging multiple copyright violations, as Bisnews AFE has been reproducing InfoQuest’s copyright work including interviews, stock and investment analysis and other information, on its own services without authorization.
Acting on behalf of InfoQuest, P&P Law Firm, on 18 March 2015, filed the lawsuit against Bisnews AFE (Thailand), its directors and relevant personnel at The Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court (criminal case, black case No. Aor.408/2558) on the ground of jointly committing copyright infringement of literature work under Thailand's Copyright Act of 1994.
Bisnews AFE's repeated unauthorized reproduction of InfoQuest’s copyright work initially disseminated on Aspen and other InfoQuest services, i.e. interviews, stock and investment analysis and other information, and their distribution to Bisnews AFE's clients via a paid subscription service called “BISNEWS Professional”, is causing substantial damage to InfoQuest, P&P Law Firm said.
The court will hold a preliminary hearing on 15 June 2015 and has granted an order to temporarily shut down the “BISNEWS Professional” system in order to gather data from Bisnews’ computer servers which relate to the case and may be used as evidence in the the court’s trial. On 20 April 2015, police officers from the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECSD) and Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), searched the office of Bisnews AFE (Thailand) Co., Ltd., at U Chu Liang Building, and gathered data from Bisnews’ computers for further investigation and legal proceedings.
After filing this lawsuit, InfoQuest may consider lodging another civil case to claim for damages, as well as another criminal case against Bisnews and any third party, who support in any way Bisnews' actions that cause damage to InfoQuest.
In addition, InfoQuest’ legal counselor also requested that all users and service providers, relating to BISNEWS Professional application, immediately cease and desist from using any of the services which cause damage to InfoQuest.
InfoQuest Limited (www.infoquest.co.th), is a Bangkok-based company setup in 1990, and the operator of the Aspen Mobile, Aspen for Windows and Aspen for Browser in Thailand.
