Electricity Generating Public Company Limited or EGCO Group by Thai Conservation of Forest Foundation (TCOF or Thai Rak Pa Foundation) has renovated and officially handed over "Doi Pui Summit Nature Trail" in Chiang Mai to Suthep-Pui National Park of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). The nature trail enhancement project included the construction of trailheads, observation decks, and the installation of signages throughout the entire route. Located just a short distance from Chiang Mai city, the nature trail is expected to become the city's "backyard forest." As part of one of the country's major watershed forests, the trail will serve as an important and easily accessible learning site for studying local ecosystems and understanding the value of Northern Thailand's hill evergreen forests. The handover ceremony was held on 15 December 2025, with Mr. Somkiat Suttiwanich, EGCO Group's Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Thai Conservation of Forest Foundation, officially handing over the trail to Mr. Attapol Charoenchansa, Director General of the Department of Natural Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Meanwhile, Mr. Siwakorn Buapong, Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai, witnessed the event.
Mr. Somkiat Suttiwanich, EGCO Group's Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Thai Conservation of Forest Foundation, said, "Believing that "a good beginning leads to good results," EGCO Group places high importance on fostering sustainable communities, society, and the environment from the very start. For more than 23 years, the company has established and supported Thai Conservation of Forest Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on watershed forest conservation, rehabilitation, and biodiversity promotion in Thailand's important watershed forests. One of our major missions is to develop standard nature trails that serve as natural classrooms for the public and visitors, allowing them to experience and appreciate the importance and value of watershed forests and nature. From 2015 to 2024, the foundation has worked closely with the DNP to improve 10 nature trails across 4 national parks in 3 provinces: Chiang Mai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Chaiyaphum."
In 2025, the foundation and Suthep-Pui National Park jointly improved Doi Pui Summit Nature Trail, which comprises 3 sub-trails ranging from 5 to 8 kilometers. Each trail takes approximately 2.5 - 5 hours to complete a round-trip. The improvements aim to enhance safety and path durability while ensuring the trails blend harmoniously with the surrounding nature and remain environmentally friendly. The project also included the construction of 4 trailheads, 3 viewpoints, and 24 interpretive signs explaining the unique characteristics of the local environment, wildlife, and plant species at each location.
The sub-trails were designed to accommodate the diverse needs and behaviors of visitors.
- Route 1: Doi Pui Summit (Doi Pui Summit Trailhead - Doi Hua Moo) - This 4.9-kilometer round-trip route takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete. It is ideal for those interested in learning about high-mountain watershed forests, ecological management, and enjoying panoramic views of Chiang Mai city.
- Route 2: Morakot (Morakot Trailhead - Doi Hua Moo) - Designed to reconnect people with nature, this 4.5-kilometer round-trip trail takes about 2.5 hours to walk. It is ideal for birdwatchers and those seeking to recharge themselves with the restorative power of nature.
- Route 3: Long Walk (Yod Doi Pui Summit Trailhead - Doi Hua Moo - Ban Khun Chang Kian) - This 7.5-kilometer round-trip trail takes roughly 5 hours to complete. Some sections are steep, making it suitable for physically fit visitors who enjoy challenges and want to learn about nature and local ways of life. From Doi Hua Moo, which offers truly scenic views, visitors can continue along the firebreak to Ban Khun Chang Kian, a Hmong community in the Doi Suthep-Pui forest area. This small village is renowned as the place to admire the soft pink blossoms of the Wild Himalayan Cherry, often called the Thai Sakura.
"The Doi Pui Summit Nature Trail is the "backyard forest trail" of Chiang Mai." It is one of the nature trails closest to the city, serving as an important watershed forest and a place to learn about the area's unique ecology. It is an ideal location for appreciating the value of hill evergreen forests in the northern region, all within easy reach. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature, discover the importance of forest ecosystems, and explore how they are connected to the way of life of people in Chiang Mai. Walking these nature trails helps raise awareness and encourages visitors to take part in mitigating climate change and preserving nature," said Mr. Somkiat.
Mr. Attapol Charoenchansa, Director General of the Department of Natural Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, stated, "The cooperation between DNP, EGCO Group, and Thai Conservation of Forest Foundation in developing and improving nature trails in several national parks began in 2008 and has continued to this day under the fourth Memorandum of Understanding (2021 - 2026). This demonstrates that EGCO Group and Foundation are excellent examples of private-sector organizations with a strong commitment to supporting DNP's mission to protect, preserve, restore, and rehabilitate forests, wildlife, and plant species. The partnership also reinforces DNP's goal of encouraging participation from all sectors of society in managing and protecting natural resources and the environment to achieve sustainable development."
Doi Pui Summit Nature Trail is open everyday for visitors from 08.00-16.00 hrs. For more information, please contact Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Tel. 0 5321 0246, 0 5321 0244, 086 420 5242. Traveling from Chiang Mai city to the nature trail takes approximately 1.5 hours by car.
