Mr. Rapeepat Chantarasriwong, Director-General of the Department of Agriculture, and Mr. Manas Chiaravanond, Chief Executive Officer of Chia Tai Company Limited, joined hands in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on advancing agricultural research, innovation, and machinery to strengthen Thailand's agricultural sector under the concept "Market-Driven Innovation to Foster Income Growth," in line with Minister of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Narumon Pinyosinwat's policy directives.
The Director-General stated that the partnership would focus on cutting-edge research and innovation, including seed development using advanced biotechnology, genome editing technology, and testing innovative solutions such as plant protection products and registered bio-agents. Additionally, the collaboration will involve using drones for agricultural surveys and establishing smart agricultural demonstration plots. These efforts aim to improve agricultural output quality to meet market demands. The initiative will also promote agricultural services through knowledge transfer, exchange of expertise, and resource sharing, including personnel, data, facilities, equipment, and infrastructure. A significant element is the conservation of plant genetic resources via seed storage in the Department of Agriculture's Gene Bank, in line with its 2021 regulation on seed deposit services. Chia Tai has already contributed seeds from three plant families—legumes, cucurbits, and solanaceous crops—to ensure long-term food sustainability. Both parties have committed to further joint projects to enhance agricultural practices.
Mr. Manas Chiaravanond emphasized Chia Tai's commitment to offering high-quality innovative products and services, including Chia Tai solutions, to empower farmers, promote food sustainability, and improve the quality of life across sectors. This collaboration is set to accelerate Thailand's transformation into a "Tropical Seed Hub" by advancing gene editing technology, comprehensive seed production systems, and Gene Bank. Chia Tai will also promote innovations such as its Drone Academy, a pilot project aimed at encouraging the safe and appropriate use of plant protection products. Future innovations in agricultural practices will follow. Furthermore, Chia Tai will advocate for the adoption of bio-products to ensure safety for farmers, consumers, and the environment. The first joint initiative will be showcased at Chia Tai Fair 2025, scheduled from January 15-19 at Chia Tai in Kanchanaburi Province.
