Nearly a decade after the last pair of Nike Skylon 11s was swept off the shelves, the once-elusive, performance-driven shoe returns, bringing its racing heritage into a new era of everyday sportswear. Originally designed as a lightweight, responsive training shoe for dedicated runners, the Skylon 11 retains the distinctive silhouette that made it a standout in Nike's performance archives, reimagined for a new generation
A Legacy Built on Performance
First introduced in the late 2000s, the original Skylon 11 combined aerodynamic design with responsive cushioning, earning a loyal following among serious runners for its versatility, cushioning and responsiveness. Its legacy extended beyond its time on shelves, with former elite runners continuing to value the shoe long after its discontinuation
Now, as early-2000s performance aesthetics find renewed relevance in contemporary style, the silhouette returns through Nike Sportswear, bringing its distinctive Air Zoom tooling, layered construction and running heritage to a new generation as it takes its place in everyday life. Led by David Mawdsley, Expert Footwear Designer at Nike Sportswear, the redesign balances familiarity with a fresh perspective, preserving the qualities that made the original memorable while welcoming a new generation of consumers
"We're always exploring new ideas," says Mawdsley. "But those new ideas have to have a sense of familiarity, and that comes from our archives. We're looking back to push forward."
An Icon Reimagined for Today
Staying true to the original silhouette, the new Skylon 11 features a breathable mesh upper in Volt, complemented by black and Metallic Silver details. Its chunky Air Zoom midsole is defined by deep grooves and exposed pods, delivering a balanced combination of cushioning and flexibility. More colourways, ranging from Black to Hyper Pink, are also available to suit a variety of styling choices, with more to come each season
The result is a sneaker that draws on the structure and visual language of a distance-running shoe while embracing its place in contemporary sportswear. More than a revival of a familiar design, the Skylon 11 reflects Nike's continued exploration of its performance archives to inspire new expressions of sportswear.
As Mawdsley puts it, "When you wear products that emulate speed, you feel like you're living in action. Speed isn't necessarily a physical pace. It can be a mental pace. It's progressive. And in that way, progressive and speed go hand in hand."
