British Council Thailand, in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), has hosted a collaborative workshop entitled "Igniting Thailand's Future: Transforming Higher Education and Future Talent through Thai-UK TNE Partnerships". Held at the Eastin Grand Hotel Phayathai, Bangkok, the event brought together UK experts, university leaders, researchers, and academics from both Thai and international institutions to make international higher education more accessible through joint Thai-UK academic frameworks.
Mr Danny Whitehead, Country Director of British Council Thailand, stated: "As a representative of the UK and the British Council, I firmly believe that educational cooperation is the most powerful tool for building trust and lasting foundations between nations. This deep connection is underpinned by a shared 170-year history between the UK and Thailand. Educational collaboration serves as a vital engine strengthening the relationship between our two countries."
The Transnational Education (TNE) project—a cornerstone of the British Council and MHESI partnership—focuses on co-developing degree programmes, including Joint Degrees and Double Degrees, along with short courses and other TNE partnerships. These programmes target strategic sectors critical to national development, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Electric Vehicles (EV), Semiconductors, Satellite Technologies, and Health & Wellness. The initiative is backed by the "Thailand-UK TNE Exploratory Grants 2026" scheme, offering funding of up to approximately 1.1 million Thai Baht per grant. Now in its second consecutive year, the grant opens doors for Thai students to access world-class education, laying the groundwork for a workforce tailored to future market demands.
"To drive sustainable economic growth, the key challenge is not just creating new jobs, but adding value to existing roles alongside boosting productivity. Upskilling graduates and the wider workforce to meet global market demands is the only way to achieve this. However, relying solely on domestic investment could take 10 to 15 years to yield tangible results. Through TNE partnerships, we can accelerate productivity in a much shorter timeframe whilst swiftly raising Thai universities to international standards—a critical driver for Thailand's economic and social progress," Mr Whitehead added.
Regionally, Thailand is exceptionally well-positioned to become ASEAN's hub for higher education, science, research, and innovation. This potential is bolstered by strategic geography, strong government policy support, and a robust foundation of over 250 British international schools nationwide—currently educating more than 200,000 international students from kindergarten through secondary levels. The TNE initiative creates a seamless educational pathway for these students, securing a sustainable future for the nation.
"The TNE project does far more than elevate academic standards and develop local talent—it serves as a crucial bridge attracting foreign investment into Thailand. By opening doors for entrepreneurs, scientists, researchers, and thought leaders from around the globe to collaborate on pressing global challenges, such as climate change, sustainable agriculture, and healthcare, this partnership delivers benefits that extend well beyond borders," the Director of British Council Thailand concluded.
Dr Punpermsak Aruni, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), highlighted that the workshop marks a major milestone in higher education cooperation between Thailand and the UK. Promoting TNE facilitates knowledge exchange and institutional capacity building, directly supporting MHESI's policy to establish Thailand as a regional higher education hub. The collaboration emphasises future-ready curricula that blend advanced technical expertise with essential soft skills, equipping learners to adapt to global shifts and broaden their international horizons.
"The ongoing partnership between the British Council and MHESI in delivering the TNE Grants for a second year offers a vital platform for championing future-focused learning. It expands access to high-quality education, enhances employability, and extends opportunities to learners across all regions, including underrepresented groups. This ensures new graduates are resilient, adaptable, and globally minded through direct academic exchange. Furthermore, it will foster deeper research and academic staff development between Thai and UK universities," Dr Punpermsak concluded.
The event also featured panel discussions titled "Global Talent, Local Impact: The Thai-UK TNE Partnership" and "Introduction to the Thai-UK TNE Exploratory Grants 2026 and application process", exploring ways to advance the internationalisation and sustainability of Thai higher education. Additionally, it showcased exhibitions from 5 joint projects between leading Thai universities (Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi) and UK partner institutions, serving as inspiration and a guide for future TNE collaborations.
