Global Banking Leader Aseem Goyal Launches New Leadership Book Bridging Borders in Bangkok

Global banking leader, executive advisor and author Aseem Goyal officially launched Bridging Borders: Leadership, Crises and Reinvention across Eight Global Markets at Andaz One Bangkok on 15th September, bringing together more than 110 business leaders, former colleagues, friends and family members from across three decades of his life and career.

The book explores how leaders build trust, navigate cultural differences and move forward when there is no clear map. Drawing on more than three decades of banking and business experience across North America and Asia, Goyal shares personal stories and practical reflections on leadership, growth, crisis and reinvention.

His career includes roles with ANZ, Standard Chartered, TD, CIBC and SWIFT across eight markets - Canada, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Singapore, Laos and Hong Kong. He has built businesses and multicultural teams, led turnarounds, and navigated the Asian Financial Crisis, the Global Financial Crisis and the Covid pandemic. These experiences taught him first-hand that what succeeds in one culture cannot simply be transplanted into another.

These experiences underpin a collection of personal stories and practical reflections on leadership, crisis and reinvention. One defining moment came during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, when a new senior leadership appointment was cancelled within 24 hours of starting. The setback abruptly changed his career direction, but ultimately led to new roles and some of his most rewarding chapters.

The experience informs one of the book's central ideas: when the map disappears, leaders must rely on their judgement, values, relationships and ability to adapt. Alongside stories of uncertainty and setbacks, the book explores the opportunities that emerge from crossing cultures, building businesses and embracing new directions.

Goyal also challenges the idea that leadership begins with authority or having all the answers, arguing instead that it starts with trust.

"People don't reject strategy. They reject leaders they don't trust," Goyal said. "When people feel heard, that trust makes it possible to have difficult conversations, navigate uncertainty and bring people with you through change."

His own move beyond the traditional corporate world, into advisory work, consulting, speaking and writing, also shapes the book's perspective on reinvention - not simply as a response to disruption, but as a deliberate choice that builds on everything that came before.
