AXA Insurance Thailand Urges Families to Watch Out for Five Mosquito-Borne Diseases This Rainy Season

With the rainy season creating favourable conditions for mosquito breeding, the latest 2026 data from Thailand's Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, reports more than 16,000 dengue cases and 26 deaths nationwide, with adolescents aged 10-19 among the most affected, highlighting a health risk that Thai families should not overlook.

Beyond dengue fever, mosquitoes can transmit several tropical diseases that may impact both children and adults. Five key diseases that families should watch out for include:

• Dengue Fever: Transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, dengue virus typically causes a sudden high fever lasting 2-7 days, accompanied by headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea and/or a rash. Young children may display less obvious symptoms, such as unusual lethargy, reduced activity or loss of appetite. In some cases, the disease can lead to serious complications requiring hospitalisation.
• Chikungunya: Also spread by Aedes mosquitoes, Chikungunya typically causes high fever and severe joint pain, particularly affecting the wrists, hands, ankles and feet. While most patients recover, joint pain can persist for weeks or months.
• Zika Virus: Also transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, Zika infection is generally mild, and many cases are asymptomatic. Symptoms, when present, may include low-grade fever, rash, red eyes and joint pain. However, infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects, including microcephaly and other congenital abnormalities, particularly when infection occurs during early pregnancy.
• Malaria: Caused by parasites transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes, malaria in Thailand is commonly found in forested, mountainous and border areas. Key symptoms include high fever, chills, heavy sweating, headaches and fatigue. Without timely treatment, malaria can become life-threatening.
• Japanese Encephalitis (JE): Spread by Culex mosquitoes commonly found around stagnant water, rice-growing areas and rural communities, Japanese encephalitis is often asymptomatic but can cause severe brain inflammation, particularly in children, resulting in high fever, vomiting, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness.
