Singapore's Fashion Festival returns for the third year from 21 March to 6 April 2003. The first fashion event which brings spring/summer collections directly from catwalks to boutiques, the Singapore Fashion Festival is growing in prominence as one of the world's key fashion events.

From 14 events with an estimated turnout of 15,000 in 2001, the Fashion Festival has seen increased interest as shown by the 2002 figures - 21 events and an estimated turnout of over 60,000. More than 10 per cent of the turnout each year are visitors to Singapore. International fashion media ranging from Fashion Television, ELLE to Marie Claire was in town to capture the colour and excitement of the 2002 event. In terms of designer labels, the likes of Salvatore Ferragamo, Christian Dior, Kenzo and Calvin Klein have been the signature names to adorn Singapore Fashion Festival.

Next year's fashion fortnight in Singapore will once again hold audiences spellbound. The line up is even more adventurous, with debut showings by Tunisian-born designer Azzedine Ala?a - well known as the King of Cling -, Russian couturier Valentin Yudashkin and Singapore's very own Andrew Gn, the Paris-based designer who is already making waves in New York and Paris.

Singapore Fashion Festival 2003 offers a rare insight into Ala?a's illustrious 25-year career in the first ever Ala?a Retrospective Exhibition. Another event focused on the designer is the Supermodels in Ala?a Photographic Exhibition that will feature pictures taken with supermodels such as Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell, by renowned international fashion photographers.

Equally exciting will be the collection by Russian couturier Valentin Yudashkin, whose designs have been exhibited in the Louvre Costume Museum, the California Fashion Museum and the International Olympic Museum. Yudashkin has also been accepted to the Paris Fashion Syndicate, the world's most prestigious fashion association. Designing for women who want to be noticed, Yudashkin's collections are frequently presented at the Parisian catwalks.

Singapore-born, Paris-based designer, Andrew Gn, who has made an impact in the New York and Paris fashion circles, will present his luxury pret-a-porter collection in Singapore for the first time. Having worked in fashion houses such as Emanuel Ungaro and Pierre Balmain, it is his clean and simple lines of his collection, which are distinctive characteristics of Gn's works.

Other designer labels participating in this year's Fashion Festival include Biyan, Chloe, Etro, La Perla and Vera Wang.
Singapore's Fashion Festival is also a key opportunity for young Asian designers to showcase their works to an international audience.

Mercedes-Benz is the official sponsor of the Singapore Fashion Festival 2003 and joins in this year with the Mercedes Asia Fashion Week, which aims to nurture the young Asian fashion designers. This initiative will introduce a new generation of creative talent from the region and position Singapore as the retail fashion capital of the East. Budding designers will be invited to submit collections of their works in sketches and photographs to an international panel of judges including Azzedine Ala?a and Andrew Gn. Any freelance Asian designer aged between 21 and 35, with at least two years relevant work experience in the industry, is eligible to enter. A total of 15 will be shortlisted to participate in the event and out of these, five designers will be selected to go on an all-expenses-paid trip to visit Ala?a and Gn at their respective ateliers in Paris.

In support of charity, the organisers of the Singapore Fashion Festival 2003 will donate S$5 to the Singapore Breast Cancer Foundation for every main event ticket sold.

The Singapore Fashion Festival 2003 is organised by MS Twilight Pte Ltd in association with StarrTurn Pte Ltd and IMG, and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board. The event is also supported by Singapore retailers with the participation of major department stores and shopping centres in fashion and in-store events, cocktails, exhibitions and promotions.
