SET Grants 500 Scholarships to Train New Brokers, with a Focus on Ethics To Creat Confidence among Investors

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), together with the Thailand Securities Institute (TSI), plans for the second year in a row to grant scholarships to train new graduates as brokers. This is part of a move to continue developing the Thai capital markets as well as boost confidence among investors and the public.   Apart from ensuring that the quality of service is up to standard, this year's training will focus on Ethics.   Admission begins today and will finish on February 16, 2003.

To provide this opportunity for new undergraduates and graduates from all fields awarded degrees in the 2001-2003 period (by June 30, 2003) and aged thirty or less, the TSI has joined hands with leading securities firms in granting these scholarships for brokerage training.   Each scholarship is worth 14,000 baht.   Those accepted will receive training and then be tested in two courses: Fundamental Knowledge of Financial and Capital Markets and Certified Marketing Representative : Equity, while the ones who pass will be awarded a lifetime broker certificate that can be registered with the Securities Exchange Commission, but must be renewed every two years.   More importantly, they can also apply for positions as brokers with member companies of the SET.

SET Executive Vice-President, Mr. Punsak Vejanurug, said, "The SET, with leading securities companies, has joined hands for the second year to grant 500 scholarships for recent graduates to train them as brokers.   The objective is to develop the Thai capital markets and boost confidence among investors and the general public that there are capable, qualified, and talented personnel to carry out their stock transactions.   This should also contribute to helping develop the investor base."

SET Senior Vice President, Mr. Dhanes Temsupanan, said, "This cooperation between the SET and leading securities companies will not only help develop the Thai capital markets for the future but also have an immediate benefit for society by helping to reduce unemployment.   The 22 securities companies joining in the campaign can also be assured they would receive new employees that are qualified, talented, ethical, and possess the drive to be good brokers. The securities companies will choose 303, while the SET will select 197 of the candidates to train as brokers."

Vice President ,TSI Management Department Head, Mrs. Naowarat Bumrungchit, offered an outline of the admission process: "The Institute will open admission from January 27 - February 16 through our website www.tsi-thailand.org.   Applicants must complete a questionnaire and choose the two securities company they hope to work for.   Then they must submit their application, along with a copy of their transcript, identification card, and house registration to their top choices amongst the securities companies, or submit it in person to the company at the Career Day to be held on February 7 at the Stock Exchange of Thailand building on Ratchadapisek Road.

Applicants will have a chance to meet with leading securities companies on that day, as well as listen to talks aimed at introducing these companies, the SET, the TSI, and how to become an experienced broker.   Selection results will be announced on March 19, 2003 through the Institute's website.   Those interested in participating can call 0-2229-2120-2 or contact the Call Center at 0-2229-2222.

The Thailand Securities Institute (TSI), an organization that is part of the Stock Exchange of Thailand, was set up in 2001 with the objectives of 1.) developing knowledge, understanding, skills, and career standards among personnel in the industry to meet international standards, as well as to develop personnel to the fullest while increasing the Thai stock market's competitiveness; and 2.) to instill ethics among those in the securities industry, related industries, as well as investors.   In the past two years, the Institute has administered exams to test the knowledge of 6,667 personnel to ensure satisfactory service and boost investor confidence.
