Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd., a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), jointly announced the establishment of a cooperative agreement between the two organizations that will involve academic and technical knowledge transfers as well as career development support for students focusing on telecommunications and related disciplines. The initial agreement is for two years with the possibility that the term will be extended. Huawei also announced the four KMITL students who will receive special two year academic scholarships as part of the company’s ongoing educational CSR program.

Under the new agreement, Huawei and KMITL will cooperate in a number of key areas including skills development for both students and Huawei staff, provision of special summer training programs for students, staff exchanges including having Huawei professionals serve as instructors, mentors or advisors at KMITL, and facilitating qualified KMITL students to apply for internships or full-time positions at Huawei. This is the first agreement of its type for Huawei in Thailand and will demonstrate the many practical benefits to be achieved when academic institutions partner with leading private sector corporations.

“We are very pleased to announce this important agreement with the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, and look forward to a very close and productive working relationship with their faculty of engineering,” said Mr. Chen Rui, Managing Director, Huawei Technologies (Thailand). “KMITL has an outstanding reputation in telecommunications technology and electrical engineering, which are fields of particular interest to Huawei. Further, many of our staff, including a number of our senior local executives, have graduated from this faculty, so we are very familiar with the high quality of their graduates. We believe that Huawei can provide valuable expertise and insights into state-of-the-art technology that will benefit both the students and faculty of the institution and ultimately help develop Thailand’s human resource infrastructure.”

Huawei’s cooperative agreement with KMITL represents the company’s first such initiative with the education sector in Thailand, and is an element of Huawei’s global “Telecom Seeds for the Future” program that was originally established in 2008. Under this program Huawei Thailand has executed a large number of knowledge transfer programs and provided guest lectures at Thailand’s top academic institutions, which have provided training to approximately 1,000 Thai students. Additionally, Huawei has offered internships to approximately 100 qualified university students from across Thailand. The company is also organizing a special 2-week trip to Huawei’s corporate headquarters for 10 students, 2 professors and 10 government experts to offer an unparalleled opportunity to gain first-hand experience with Chinese culture while gaining knowledge about the latest breakthroughs in advanced next generational ICT, and how they can benefit Thailand’s development.

In the coming year Huawei plans to establish formal relations with the engineering and technology oriented faculties at the top 10 universities in Thailand. This will represent a critical element of the company’s total CSR program and reinforce its reputation as an excellent corporate citizen in Thailand.

“King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang is very gratified to enter into this cooperative relationship with Huawei and we are confident that in addition to the benefits our students and faculty will receive, we will also be able to share technical expertise and innovative solutions with that will be of interest to Huawei,” said Assistant Professor Dr. Komsan Maleesee, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. “KMILT and the Faculty of Engineering will have the 55th year anniversary next year and we have consistently graduated excellent students who have gone on to help develop Thailand’s infrastructure and economy. We are always looking for ways to improve the educational experience of our students and this agreement with Huawei promises to offer a unique set of benefits including access to world class technology, professional expertise and insights from professionals in the industry and of course the ability to apply for practical internships that offer our students the ability to learn by doing at a major global corporation. This set of benefits will greatly enhance our offering and lead to even better qualified graduates from our programs.”

In addition to signing the agreement with KMITL, Huawei also presented 4 special scholarships to highly qualified engineering students. These 2-year scholarships offer funds to pay the cost of tuition as well as help cover books and other living expenses. Additionally, the recipients will be able to participate in Huawei’s highly competitive internship program and have a guaranteed full-time job upon graduation. The scholarships are awarded based on a combination of academic performance and financial need with the final decision made by a committee comprised of representatives from Huawei Thailand and KMITL’s Faculty of Engineering.

“Huawei is committed to growing our presence in Thailand over the long-term and engaging in ongoing collaborative relationships with key academic institutions is an important part of this process. Within five years we plan to expand our Telecom Seeds for the Future program to 20 major universities where it will reach some 3,000 students. While our scholarship program will be expanded to 300 students and we will offer an additional 100 students the opportunity to join special study trips to our Headquarters in China. Through these activities we both help develop the skilled human resources Thailand will need to compete in the global market of tomorrow, while also raising awareness of Huawei’s technology leadership and unique culture. This is really a win-win situation that we look forward to expanding in the years ahead,” concluded Mr. Chen.
