The Thai Chess Festival 2004, organized by The Stock Exchange of Thailand, SETTRADE.COM and the Thai Investors Association, closed its curtain with former five-time winner "Sian Pong", defeating his rival "Sian Waeng" after four games. Sian Pong was named the new Top Wizard. In the Open category, Pairoj   Suwan walked home with a THB50,000 cash prize, as well as an honorable trophy and a certificate.

Dr. Bhokin Bholakul, the Interior Minister, presided over the awards ceremony of the Thai Chess Festival 2004 and said "I really appreciate the SET and related agencies for organizing this competition and for recognizing the importance of Thai chess, a traditional Thai game that promotes the use of brains and planning, the skills most suitable for our daily lives.   Besides, the matches, which have been open to all members of the public to take part in it, encourage the use of their brains and the optimum use of free time. Consequently, they help develop an important quality in Thai society in one way."

Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong, the president of The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), said that the Thai Chess Festival 2004 is one of many activities under the capital market project for students. The SET and other related agencies decided to organize this competition to help promote one of Thailand's traditional games which can effectively develop concentration and intelligence. It is also aimed at encouraging the public and Thai youths to productively use their free time, both for themselves and their families.

"This is a competition that has brought in chess players and champions from all categories and ages, ranging from elementary and junior high school to high school, undergraduate, Open and the Top level. A total of 729 contestants joined in the event, the highest number since the Thai chess competition has been held in Thailand. More than THB500,000 are rewarded for the champions of 6 categories.   We can say the Thai Chess Festival 2004 is the biggest contest in a decade.   It ran from Saturday, April 24 until Sunday, May 16, 2004, altogether three weeks" said the SET president.

Winners of each category are:

Elementary category:   The winner, who received a THB10,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is 11-year-old Pireeyapong   Piriyathamwong.   The first runner-up, who received a THB5,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is 11-year-old   Parinpat   Angsuwarangsee.   The second runner-up, who received a THB3,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is 10-year-old Watunyoo   Jaiyen.

Junior High School category:   The winner, who received a THB10,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Akepon   Jetpiyawat.   The first runner-up, who received a THB5,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Worathep   Timsri.   The second runner-up, who received a THB3,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Ukrit Moomun.

High School category:   The winner, who received a THB10,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Ariya   Thangsunthontham.   The first runner-up, who received a THB5,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Pradit   Sungkajay.   The second runner-up, who received a THB3,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Saphong Hansing.

Undergraduate category:   The winner, who received a THB15,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Patnarin Kitchakarn.   The first runner-up, who received a THB9,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Nattanan Takpradit. The second runner-up, who received a THB5,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Jatupong Tangsakulkarjang.

Open category:   The winner, who received a THB50,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Pairoj Suwan.   The first runner-up, who received a THB30,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Viroon   Buncherdpongchai.   The second runner-up, who received a THB20,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Danuphob   Sungsuwun.

Top Wizard category:   The winner, who received a THB100,000 cash prize, together with an honorable trophy and a certificate, is Suchat   Chaivichit   (Wizard "Pong").   The first runner-up, who received a THB80,000 cash prize, together with an honorable plaque and a certificate, is Boonsueb Sacheng (Wizard "Waeng).   The second runner-up, who received a THB50,000 cash prize, together with an honorable plaque and a certificate, is Sathit Kasetchol (Daeng-Kon Kaen).   And the third runner-up, who received a THB30,000 cash prize, together with an honorable plaque and a certificate, is Nakorn Trisa-and (Wizard "Nakorn)
